Phenomenally bad

I am a lifelong writer and editor. I run a university media office, where I write about science every day. For years, my focus was the natural and social sciences as they relate to environmental management, but recently I took a new position in an engineering school and am now writing about a range of complex science that involves inorganic chemistry: materials science, semiconductors, LEDs, bio-engineering, and other areas of research. Needing to study up and hoping to have a handy reference at arms length as I develop a lexicon of new concepts and language, I purchased this book, which has to be the single most poorly written, sloppily edited, unclear, cumbersome, disorganized, repetitive, and otherwise unhelpful bundle of blather I have encountered in a very long time. Words are missing, the wrong word is used (offering a possible double meaning), the most basic linguistic functions are fumbled repeatedly, the authors make a point of calling our attention to an irony when there is no irony. They introduce two or three new terms in a sentence and then proceed without first defining the new terms. The analogies presented to clarify serve only to muddy the waters. At one point early on, describing the size of an atom, they said imagine you are standing on an orange the size of the earth. Then you need to fill that orange that is the size of the earth with regular-sized oranges. That's how big an atom is compared to an orange. What they meant was that an atom is to the size of an orange, what an orang is to the size of the earth. I gave the short version of their analogy story here. It took them a whole paragraph, with lots of repetition. This book is so annoying, that I'm copy-editing it as I go, pencil in hand. I am hacking my way through it, and I can usually make out what they are saying, but man, there has to be a better book on the subject. These "for Dummies" books tend to share this element of poor writing, dumb jokes that don't present information, and extremely poor editing. When they are talking about an early model that postulated the structure of an atom, they take us through an experiment in which alpha waves (they don't bother telling us what they are) are directed at metallic foil. The point is that negative charges go right through the foil. But they language it so that THE MODEL is going through the foil. It's ludicrous, and maddening and sloppy and just plain bad.

I don't recommend this for an inorganic student (class or test review)

I went through the entire book. So honestly, it has the following: Several typos but not much, scattered confusing explanation, incomplete concepts illustration , and no problems to practice your understanding. I don't recommend this for an inorganic student (class or test review). Hopefully a next edition will upgrade and reform the content. Khan academy and a good gen chemistry book will do the job for most of the book contents.

This book focuses on how to apply Sun Tzu's wisdom to business and personal success. The content has three unique features. 1. A new translation of "The Art of War." 2. Excerpts from other translations clarify meanings. 3. Text is simplified into 50 rules for strategic thinking enhanced by useful examples.

Because the Chinese ideogram can be translated with different meanings, I searched world libraries to find different translations. Where translations vary the different meanings are shared in the text. To read "Sun Tzu: The Art of War for Managers" is to read the essence of many translations.

The 50 rules for strategic thinking will assist in your search for useful applications of Sun Tzu's wisdom. Each rule is supported by examples showing how this rule has been, and can be, applied. In a new section in this edition, contemporary managers discuss their personal experiences in applying these rules.

Sun Tzu: The Art of War for Business Managers

I have read and heard of many business professionals trying to apply Sun Tzu principles of war to business leadership but never in such an in depth, coherent and eloquent manner.
The author several times equates business with war. I am not sure that the parallels can be drawn as easily as he asserts. This does not diminish the application of the principles of the book; however the idea that business is war is a bit misguided in my opinion. Business can be done with partnerships and comradery within an industry.
The book utilized numerous quotes. These seemed rarely helpful yet are definitely a fun addition that I approve of. In addition the multiple interpretations were not only useful to understand the material but also insightful as to how to view the passages and their applications. The examples the book draws on not only helped to clarify how the principles can be used but also lended great credibility to the belief that these lessons can be used in a much more peaceful environment than the battlefield.
Many lessons seemed like common sense, but are so commonly overlooked in today's world that it's about time they were written down so that business managers do put thought into these situations. For instance in chapter 6 the book mentions the advantages of taking the initiative. In this instance the firm will need skill preparation and information.Simultaneously it is common to not have enough time, resources or information. This seems simple but it is not often that a manager will think in these terms exactly.
The "Ten Minute" lesson format kept the book fast paced and did not become monotonous or tedious as some contemporary business writings seem to be.
10 minute chapters or lessons give a comfortable class like feel that I believe enhances learning. I thought this was innovative and a huge asset to Michaelson's book.
While I did thoroughly enjoy the book there were certain parts that seemed morally questionable. Business will probably never be a completely free of corruption or disreputable behavior however executives should strive to be more upright in their actions. Michaelson's book teaches that in war and business it is a fine tactic to take advantages of another's misfortunes, deceive for advantage and use spies. Chapter 7 in fact has a sub section on employing deception. If your troops or employees do not feel that these are acceptable tactics then, according Sun Tzu, you will lose. The first constant factor listed in Chapter 1 is "moral influence" troops and employees are better motivated and more committed at what they do when they believe their cause is righteous.
These actions may be palatable in war but do they have a place in modern business.
I would highly recommend this book to business students. As a graduate student with some work experience I find the lessons learned very functional and relevant to today's professional world. I also would say that the lessons are made simple enough so that an undergraduate or inexperienced business individual would have no trouble understanding the concepts or teachings presented within the book. I could assume that even the seasoned business leader could glean some new knowledge from the many teachings within or at least be entertained by the work.

Simple yet Comprehensive Translation into Modern Management

Michaelson, who has also written a few other books related to Sun Tzu's ancient text, takes a very usable approach in the "Art of War for Managers". It is very well thought out and has numerous instantly recognizable examples in the modern context. The language is easy to follow and direct quotes from the original Sun Tzu often have several different translations provided for better understanding.

The 50 Strategic Rules are divided up following the 13 chapters of the original "Art of War". Each Rule is a 5-10 minute read, so it's very easy to pick-up from your last read after having the book placed to the side for a while. Although, it is important to note that each Rule is not very in-depth, I believe it was meant to provide quick and simple insights. Each Rule includes a quoted Sun Tzu text, usually a helpful quote from a famous leader, then a well written manager's commentary to describe and support. The easy accessibility to these quick lessons are extremely useful when looking for inspiring ideas while making important business decisions.

Part Two of this book includes a very useful "Practical Applications" chapter. While not completely practical, the concepts are generally well accepted and do inspire ideas that are very practical. Having specific examples of modern business implementation is where many "Art of War" writers usually fail. To see this added section affirms that Michaelson thought his book out to tactical ends.

I've read many attempts at the "Art of War" and Michaelson's books are easily on the top of that pile. Sun Tzu in the Consumer Packaged Goods Environment

Tactics and strategies do not need to be new but a reminder or refresher. How an individual understands and uses these tactics again or differently is the beauty of Sun Tzu. Each chapter of the book acknowledged a unique and simple way to handle various business situations from planning, maneuvering, using teamwork as well as truly understanding your competition. Through such knowledge, businesses can avoid wasting time and energy by planning the right strategy.

Sun Tzu is based on military organization and not all can be combined to business. Sun Tzu believes, "the way to avoid what is strong is to attack what is weak. Look for lightly defended positions." This may not always be the case as some potentially weaker products may not be performing in the consumer packaged goods market like a larger brand but they could be fulfilling a niche or paying the retailer to be on the shelf. No matter how much their sales are lackluster, they may not only have the unique niche market your product may not satisfy, they are also helping the retailer achieve his balance sheet goals. Secondly, I disagree from an ethics standpoint that price deception is a useful tactic in negotiations. There are laws in the consumer packaged goods marketplace against price collusion with competitors and employees can quickly lose their jobs and careers if caught in violation.
Businesses must continue to gain share and strength by understanding the marketplace and being on the pulse of change through innovation and education of its products. Sun Tzu reminds us how to do this. It is integral to be flexible with the unsteady economic and recessionary times. The world is in trying times and as a manager I must continue to study competition and be ready to change my tactics at a moments notice. As Sun Tzu reminds us, there needs to be an evolution of growth using teamwork, strategizing battlegrounds and understanding the wants and needs of consumers to gain an advantage over the competition.

Excellent resource

An excellent resource for any band director. Really enjoy the interview (very interesting to see where some of the warm-up routines that are so common today came from), and the instrument specific pedagogy is great, especially for young teachers.

Great interview with my mentor

If you want to improve your program, buy this book. If you want to get organized, buy this book. It is the product of years of experience compiled by Eddie. He gave us this info in our education classes at U of H in the form of copious notes and I modified it for orchestra. it worked like a charm!

What follows are the decades of births and deaths, the celebrations, material accumulations, and home comforts—until one day, her children grown and gone, her husband absent, she finds herself alone except for the ghosts of her youth, who have come back to haunt and even taunt her.

Compelling and complex, Forty Rooms is also profoundly affecting, its ending shattering but true. We know that Mrs. Caldwell (for that is the only name by which we know her) has died. Was it a life well lived? Quite likely. Was it a life complete? Does such a life ever really exist? Life is, after all, full of trade-offs and choices. Who is to say her path was not well taken? About the Author
Olga Grushin was born in Moscow in 1971. After studying art and journalism in Moscow, she was awarded a full scholarship to Emory University in 1989. Her first novel, The Dream Life of Sukhanov, earned her a place on Granta's list of Best Young American Novelists and won her the New York Public Library's Young Lions Award; it was also a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Best First Novel award and for Britain's Orange Prize. In 2002 she became an American citizen. She lives in Potomac, Maryland.

So many of us could relate to this character. Moving through the chapters, I realized heart-wrenching similarities, and I, like others, am Mrs Caldwell. Strong melodic ending. Looking forward to more from Olga Grushin.

Boring and Banal Story, Beautifully Written

I understand why so many reviewers are rating this book highly. I thought it was well-written, and interesting stylistically, weaving the magical together with reality. I like the first quarter of the book, describing the young woman’s fight against traditional expectations.

But then it turned into the life of a woman who is totally unable to mature or make any kind of sensible decisions in her own life. Instead, she lets her tediously conventional but extremely abundant life happen around her while complaining about it the whole time.

Spoiler Alert: I only finished the book to see if she ever made a decision to take control of her own life; or was she really a mentally ill person imagining the whole thing. Sadly, neither was part of the story line.

Great for a simpler overview of the Immune System

Ahh, I found this be a refreshing take on the workings of the immune system. I was surprised at how thin the book is, but it still contains a decent overview of the immune system - enough to get a good grasp on things, but not burdened with the kind of detail that some other immunology textbooks are. I think it would be perfect for someone who is interested in the immune system, who wants to learn about it, but doesn't have to be tested on all of the details. This is a FUN book, and Lauren Sompayrac does a fantastic job of explaining the immune system using words that normal people can understand.

I'd be surprised if this was actually used in an Immunology class, as it is quite small. I used it as a supplement to Janeway's Immunobiology, which is just overwhelming, but which was the formal text used in my Immunology course. I would use the Sompayrac book to get a basic understanding of things either before or right after lecture, and then would read the Janeway text while re-listening to my lectures, in order to fill in the details. It was still tough, but this book made it a little bit easier and may have staved off a few gray hairs. I'll be keeping this book around, and will probably re-sell the Janeway's text, as I won't need to know all the nitty-gritties of the immune system later on.

2020 Update & Possibly the Best Small Text of All Time!

A few reviews have said that this little 141 page text is "dated." Two persepectives:

1. The material covered is timeless. Our understanding of T and B cells will evolve over time, but the basic function, and the ideas of receptor sites, etc. are so fundamental that a few decades here or there cannot possibly subtract from the immense value of this text.

2. Current thinking ("2020") is that we're entering an era of completely recasting the immune system, with as revolutionary a paradigm shift as recombinant DNA itself. One aspect of this is thinking of this system as multiple systems (6 or more in some literature). Another is the role of microRNA (small ds- double stranded RNA) and the epigenomic phenomena of RNA-interference.

These phenomena don't subtract from antibody or cell mediated immunity as models, they ADD to them. For complete coverage of the new models, without spending a fortune or trying to scan a whole large text, see any book or recent article by Dr. Bagasra, including:Immunology and the Quest for an HIV Vaccine: A New Perspective .

That out of the way, when our ClassPros and Library Picks surveys poll med students, THIS little text has come up in the top 5 for over a decade (and the top 1 or 2 in the last 3 years)! How is it possible, with texts of 1,000 pages, that an 8.5 x 11" 141 page, colorful "High School" looking monograph consistently takes these honors?

The answer is the astonishing flow of the metaphors coupled with "aha" pictures and illustrations on every page. Each page, though PACKED with information, is told like a story, and the pictures, both descriptive and visual, "stick" in your mind in a way that allows a synthesis that no other text has ever achieved, in my opinion (I'm a molecular biologist) in ANY field I've reviewed! Lauren makes the field "seem" understandable with only the most basic understanding of bio, and every reader here knows that simply isn't true--immunology is one of the most complex, rapidly changing fields in all of bio. The balance of history, metaphor, quant and color illustration is nearly perfect.

You can literally get more insight into the CURRENT view of the immune system from an integrative point of view with intuitive understanding with two days immersed in this book than a semester with Janeway (888 pages), Parham (600 pages) or Male (480 pages). I'm not knocking those fine texts, and you certainly need their detail, but without Sompayrac, you will sincerely miss the "whole picture" that relates SO many topics.

As an intro, a reference (now comes with fully searchable pdf), a supplement, or even just an enjoyable popular science review that will make you a LOT smarter than those who took Janeway but missed this (;=)), I cannot recommend this enough, and intend to make sure the adjunctive option is on all those Amazon text pages for the benefit of all of us struggling with this wonderful but challenging field.

Just what I was looking for!

I have been struggling to understand papers written about the immune system for years and finally decided to go back to Square One and relearn it all. This book is not only clearly written, but fun (see the hot dog bun explanation of MHC I and II molecules on page 9). Best of all, the author understands what can be confusing to the novice and explains it (page 27: "Immunologists say that B cell receptors are 'cross-linked' although they really are not linked together" and page 45 "Dendritic antigen presenting cells don't kill and macrophages don't travel"). The subject matter is still very complex and I'm on my fourth time through the first few chapters, but at least what I'm trying to learn is, for once, clearly presented.

Considering these works, it seems fair to say that the publisher's "Encountering Biblical Studies" series will make a useful contribution to a reader's biblical knowledge. The series, designed for undergraduate college courses in religion but useful for educated lay readers as well, is written from a very conservative or evangelical perspective and provides good examples of that approach. Aside from expository volumes like Hagner's, which address individual books of the Bible, the series consists of two surveys treating the Old and New Testaments plus two collateral volumes of readings aimed at placing the Testaments in historical context. With Readings from the Ancient Near East: Primary Sources for Old Testament Study, Arnold and Beyer (coauthors, Encountering the Old Testament) provide a selection of 91 documents from other cultures surrounding Israel and thus inform the reader of the wider cultural, religious, and social context in which the Old Testament documents were composed. Each selection is preceded by brief comments that make clear the background and content of the text. They are arranged in the same order as the books of the Old Testament and are collected under headings such as "Creation and the Flood" and "Law Codes." An excellent selection by the editors helps the reader compare and contrast biblical material with other readings from the same region. The book by Hagner (George Eldon Ladd Professor of New Testament, Fuller Theological Seminary) is not a verse-by-verse exposition but a chapter-by-chapter summary of the major themes of the New Testament Book of Hebrews. Hagner also includes commentary on how this applies to the Christian life. Each chapter is preceded by an outline, a list of supplemental reading from other biblical books, and suggested objectives for student learning. At the end of each chapter is a list of study questions, key terms, and a bibliography for further reading. A select bibliography, glossary, Scripture index, and subject index add to the usefulness of the volume. Both books are recommended for libraries looking to supplement their collection of evangelical books related to the study of the Bible.

Good Intro / Overview of Hebrews

Hagner does a decent job of digging deeper into the book of Hebrews. This book is a great way to step into the vast array of literature on the book of Hebrews that is out there. The major issues in Hebrew's are covered from a fairly conservative angle. Hagner does not hide what he believes, but does point out what many sides to the different issues in Hebrews are.

The side conversation windows are helpful in going farther on certain points such as perfection and others. This book is going to get you a lot farther in your study of Hebrews than a bible dictionary or some crackpot online commentary. Well worth your time, if you are interested. JVD

Excellent intro into the study of Hebrews.

Donald Hagner's work here is an excellent introduction to studying one of the most complex books of Scripture. With a gift for being able to communicate and a willingness to let Scripture say what it says without contorting its plain meaning to make it fit some theological form, Hagner succeeds at opening the book of Hebrews marvelously.

Like the other books in the Encountering Biblical Studies series by Baker Book this one is actually intended as a textbook for undergrad studies. Yet to avoid it out of fear that as a textbook it must be dry or overly technical is to make a mistake and miss out on a grand learning opportunity. This book would be wonderful for personal or small group Bible study for those with at least a fair understanding of the NT (if you're not there yet check out Encountering the New Testament in this series) and a hunger to go deeper. Study and be blessed.

I can't think of any commentary that is clearer in explaining all the implications, the connections with the Old Testament, the theological issues, practical applications....It is not too academic for the lay person using it for bible study or devotional...extremely readable.

Roberto Bolano was born in Santiago, Chile, in 1953. He grew up in Chile and Mexico City. His novel The Savage Detectives was chosen as one of the ten best books of 2007 by the Washington Post and the New York Times Book Review. His posthumous masterpiece, 2666, won the National Book Critics Circle Award.

Good and Bad

It's a short book that appears to have been put out to pick up the crowd surfing the Bolano wave. The initial essay focuses on Juarez and Bolano's interest in crime which is unfortunate since there is so much more to his life and work. The first interview with Soto and Bravo is excellent. Side notes state each mentioned author is basically one of the greatest South American writers; when they all become that great we become suspicious of the intent of the annotator. The second interview loses its spark, it's short without much substance, the third that appeared in the Mexican edition of Playboy is downright bad, with questions like "Did the girls in school pay any attention to you?" and "Did you collect figurines." The questions are so bland they and the answers bore the reader. Take your chances but don't expect much, which, given what we as readers want and what few books on Bolano are available, is a true shame.

Fine Collection

This little text is a treasure trove of Latin American literature. Bolano's enthusiasm for literature teams on every page of this brief collection of interviews, and it's a true testament of his passion as a writer. Bolano discusses his influences, his aesthetic sensibilities, and his strategies for writing. He emerges here as a magnificently devoted, and courageous artist who was happy just to be a participant in the world of literature. It is of course untimely and tragic that his immense gifts were cut short at the age of 50.

the other reviews of this book mention it as a slim book. Mine has 390 pages so I am wondering if everybody is reading the same book. (0330510681) this is mine. maybe there is a difference in the books that are in amazon's catalog.
