High talented but ultraromantic Barbey d'Aurevilly (Une vieille maitresse)

I read this novel with pleasure and with reticence at the same time. Generally, I am as fond of the style as of the action, the story; and Barbey d'Aurevilly style is remarkably brilliant with so many poetic metaphores. He was born in Normandy and is a master when describing the Norman coast with its high chalking cliffs dazzling in the sun and severe under the grey sky. He shows us also the dandy life (that he lived himself) of the young Parisians who spill lazily their money with women and parties.
As to the action, the main part of the novel presents the disastrous effects of an unbridled passion. And here, I have to stop in order to think about it: this passion is outrageous and the author becomes extravagant. Of course, we cannot forget that we are in the middle of the XIX century when the romanticism moves toward the fantastic or changes into supernaturalism. Maybe we could call it ultra romanticism.
I was progressing in my reading without real enthusiasm , nevertheless with great interest, when I remembered suddenly other two novels published four years before. So I think that the author read them before writing his book: Prosper M�rim�e's "Carmen", in France and Emily Bront�'s "Wuthering Heights", in England, both published in 1847. "Une vieille maitresse" was published in 1851.
To fully appreciate this novel, it's important to place it in its context, its time and literary moment. Written nowadays, I doubt it would have any success.

very handy, plus great online community

I recently used this as my sole guidebook for a two-week trip from the Altay region in the far north, to Kashgar and Tashkurgan in the far southwest, including Ili and Urumqi in the middle. I had it with me the whole time in the Kindle app on my iPad mini, and I referred to it many times throughout my trip. The whole thing is internally hyperlinked, so it's easy to jump around in the document.

It was very useful for prioritizing things worth seeing and places with going. It's not an exhaustive list of everything there is, but it's more focused and up-to-date than WikiTravel. And in these days of decision fatigue, I'm grateful to let knowledgeable people do some of the filtering for me. Summers does also include a few items in the "maybe worth your time if..." category, which I appreciated. And some of his tips (especially around Kashgar) were absolute gems!

His recommendations for hostels were reliable (except when I got to Tashkurgan, where his preferred hostel had already closed for the winter, but I was traveling at the very end of the season). I am a budget traveler, so I only stayed in hostels and family-run guesthouses, except for one time. And on that one occasion, this guide failed to keep up with the ever-changing vicissitudes of Chinese regulations regarding accommodations for foreigners. (The guide said a particular hotel was the only one that was able to take foreigners, when in fact that hotel no longer took foreigners and I had to go to a different one.) But as a static publication, it's impossible to keep up with these things. My advice for foreigners traveling *anywhere* in China, would be to call ahead and confirm that the places you intend to stay in are officially allowed to house foreigners.

The maps were useful. I printed them out and made a little booklet-size "atlas" that I carried with me. It was handy. I do have some minor complaints about the maps, though. Future versions should include a distance scale on every map and more different kinds of shapes for the place markers (for ease of distinguishing when printed in black & white). Also, I feel that maps of Ili/Yining and the surrounding region would have been useful. Trying to navigate from Ili/Yining toward the south is confusing, even with the help of knowledgeable people. My recommendation is not to depend on these maps as your only maps. Just use them to get a general idea of where things are.

But the best thing about this product is that you get to join the author's Facebook group for Xinjiang travelers. There you can ask the author and fellow travelers your specific questions and benefit from the wisdom of the crowd. I also added the author on WeChat (one of the most popular instant messaging apps in China) and occasionally asked him for advice while I was on the road. I don't think that's an official service included in the price of this product, but it felt like having a friend who I could ping for advice whenever things became unclear.

In general, Summers gives great advice and this book really helped me both plan my trip, and adjust my plans on the fly as circumstances changed. And the price is right. If you're like me and get overwhelmed by choices when you're trying to plan a trip, then it's definitely worth it to pick up this little guide.

The Real Deal

The thing about this book is that it is just as useful to the experienced China traveler as it is to someone entirely unfamiliar and uncomfortable with Xinjiang and the country as a whole. I have traveled a lot in Western China but haven't yet made it out to Xinjiang, and Josh's experience and tips have given me an excellent idea of what to look forward to and I'm well on my way to planning a trip ASAP. There is TONS of great info and Josh's writing is much more enjoyable (and useful!) to read than anything else out there that I'm aware of. Reading this guide, to me, is no different than sitting down and chatting with your buddy and getting the real DL and getting all of your questions answered in a casual and entertaining atmosphere. Even if you're not planning on traveling to Xinjiang, Josh's knowledge of and passion for the REAL Xinjiang is well worth tapping into.

A great and much-needed guide to a little-documented area

This is a sorely needed and well-written book. Josh Summers takes us on a journey round one of the more undocumented areas of the world, China’s “Far Frontier”, its largest province, north-western Xinjiang. Home to (part of) the legendary Silk Road and a mix of Muslim and Chinese ethnicities and beliefs, it’s a fascinating place to visit or, as Josh and I do, live.

It’s well-written with a light touch, and covers a literally huge area. There are details which I always wanted to know (such as which mosques can you enter to visit in Urumqi), along with all the usual stuff about hotels & hostels, and bus, train, and flight information (in such a huge province this can be essential). Unlike other guides this covers a lot of information about northern Xinjiang – the bit between Kazakhstan and Mongolia and just meeting the Altai Republic in the Russian Federation – a truly little-touristed region (as yet – come before the Chinese middle class swamp the place!). I’m sure I’ll find this information invaluable very soon.

Other excellent points are the downloadable pdf maps. Other, larger providers of e-guide books please note – many travellers do not like carrying around expensive (to the locals) tablet computers when visiting crowded markets, etc. There are also discount codes for various travel agents and services.

Writing a travel guide is a thankless task, so a few mistakes have slipped through. I can live without a history of Xinjiang, and understand Josh’s feelings that he is not qualified – after all, anyone can look it up on Wikipedia. However, people ought to know a little bit more about quite why there are so many armed police and soldiers present, and will need a guide to know what to look up. Gentleman Josh tells me that he will include links to the relevant Wikipedia entries in the printed version.

Anyone who travels to “Heavenly Lake” (Tian Chi) near Urumqi will be disappointed by the din of the Tannoys of the “pleasure” boats, and annoyed by the tourist busses stopping at a “Kazakh Cultural Village” and a Jade Factory. Chinese tourism at its worst, and not cheap. Josh does say only go if you can’t get to Kanas Lake or Karakol Lake. As Josh doesn’t say, if you want a day or two-day trip from Urumqi, go south to Nan Shan, or be prepared for a hike away from the lake (and then why pay such an exorbitant fee for going to the lake?).

I take my hat off to anyone who can pull off the effort needed to write a guide book, and can heartily recommend this one.

If you care about sports, politics, economics, conspiracies, mysteries, thrillers, history, or just a really great read you need to get this book. It blew me out of the water and I would be surprised if it didn't change the face of sports.

Did you know the FBI had information revealing that members of the New York Knicks were shaving points in exchange for cocaine from their dealer? Or that a handful of Hall of Fame quarterbacks were thought to have thrown games for gamblers? Or that a Hall of Fame NBA referee well before Tim Donaghy had a serious gambling problem and bet on NBA games? And that one mobster controlled the sport of boxing for more than two decades?

Must read for all sports fans!

I read Brian's first book "The fix is in." Being a die hard NFL fan most of my life, I was blinded by my emotional ties to the sport. Just like any other industry that involves billions of dollars, their is going to be corruption and cover ups. I like books that blow the whistle on these industries dark sides. Not for everyone? Maybe; but if this is your kind of story, it rocks.

Thanks for this one, R. Cooper! A friend insisted I read "A Boy and his Dragon" so I did that first (and loved it), but I am pretty much as enthused about this fairy/werewolf duo, Cal and Ray.

This sort of supernatural fantasy romance isn't everyone's taste. Cooper's imagined world - an alternate America where all sort of supernatural creatures just exist and have been dealt with for decades (except, oddly, vampires, which Ray insists don't really exist!!!).

Once you just go with that premise it's sort of marvelous. Seems that each of the books focuses on teaching the reader about the deeper truths of specific creatures. I do like me a good werewolf, and Ray Branigan is a good one. But I am just the kind of gay man who loves a sugar-infused fairy, and Cal Parker is awesome. Wings aside, they seem to be my type.

The sexual repression and yearning fairly buzzes off the page, and Cooper pulls the same stunt as with the boy and his dragon - that very repression of desire and love makes the ultimate payoff amazingly intense from an emotional perspective. Cooper also infuses the narrative, which is wrapped around a peculiar murder mystery with its own complications, with wonderfully imagined cultural history about these magical creatures, exposing stereotypes and false myths that misinform and confuse the characters.

That said, the lavish description of scents and smells, which of course the werewolf is very tuned to, play a significant role in this book, almost a character in itself. I can find the standard "scent of love" used in many m/m novels to be irritating and over-calculated; but in R. Cooper's sparkly pen, the very over-the-topness of smell descriptions adds to the slightly halucinogenic quality (then again, it could have been the Nyquil...). Not for everyone, but very much for me.

Clever and touching

The description above is a good enough summary, and I don't want to spoil any of the plot. If you are a fan of mysteries, the bad guy is a bit easy to spot, but the characters are what truly shine. Cal is quirky yet brilliant, and Ray is growly yet careful. The interaction between the main characters provides a love story that I will enjoy reading over and over again, and the interections with the supporting characters make this the sort of book you can't put down no matter how many times you've read it. If the author ever reads this...Thank you for Steve. I loved being surprised when he was so much more than I expected. (Even though that was the point, I was surprised. I'm as slow as Ray some days.) For everyone else, I thoroughly enjoyed how the author gave such vivid personalities to all the characters, even the most minor. There was nothing bland about this book. It was very sweet in so many ways.

I agree with the reviewer who said this was just too thin... Ray is a werewolf cop, who hates the assumptions that people make about weres, and there he is, refusing a relationship with his mate, because he is a fairy, and you know what they all say about fairies... It got marked down big time for me because the ending was so weak, basically a retelling of the entire story again, with a slightly different POV - that's just cheap and lazy writing. I skimmed the last 20% which means I didn't really read it. To get a real 3 stars I have to read it from cover to cover, and this one I didn't. But it gets 3 rather than 2 stars because it is well written and because Ray is suitably intense. I read Play It Again, Charlie from the same author first, and thought it too wasn't flawless, it was a better book on the same theme (though with no supernatural element).

About the Author
Church Father, born in Antioch. He spent six years as a monk in the mountains, but returned in 381 to Antioch, where he was ordained and gained a reputation as the greatest orator of the Church. In 398 he was made Archbishop of Constantinople, where he carried out many reforms, but his reproof of vices moved the Empress Eudoxia (ruled 395-404) to have him deposed and banished (403). His body was brought to Constantinople and reburied with honour in 438.

but there are some exceptions that read like outstanding essays

Generally I find printed sermons empty of real substance, but there are some exceptions that read like outstanding essays, such as those by Cardinal Newman, and by the Fathers of the Church, as seen in this volume. This collection of sermons may seem slight as a paperback of 54 pages, some of the sermons only several pages long, but I have found many of them worth reading and rereading as sources for my own contemplation. This volume provides pieces by such Fathers as Saints Athanasius, Saint John Chrysostom and Saint Anselm of Milan. Personally, I like best Saint Ambrose's piece on the washing of the feet at the Last Supper, "Wash My Feet, Lord." Some of these sermons speak poetically, which it must be this book's editor found particularly appealing (I find these have an appeal of their own). One of the contributors, Origen, is actually not a Father of the Church; he is represented by an allegorical piece on the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem on a donkey which most modern readers would not find helpful in understanding this event.
Of course the full-length commentaries by the Fathers on books of the Bible are of leading importance; I consider this book for its part of tertiary importance as a source of Scriptural exegesis from the Fathers of the Church, though I did like reading some of these sermons.

A Really Great Little Book

This is the second of three books I purchased on amigurumi. To be honest, I bought it because the pictures on the front were so adorable that they put me on a hunt for the author on the internet. I found her blog, which is terrific, and then I bought her book. I'm glad I did, because this book is definitely for the beginning crocheter. There are no assumptions that the reader has any more than a rudimentary knowledge of crochet and the directions are very clear.

The patterns are very simple and that's the strength of this book, in my opinion. After making several toys from this book, I was able to make my own "freestyle" patterns. I adapted her hedgehog pattern, along with the donkey pattern from the Kyuuto book (another excellent resource) and made an amigurumi alpaca. Go figure.

Although all of the patterns have the same basic look, this book, more than the others, has gotten me to experiment and create my own little beasts without written directions. That's a huge step for a beginner at crochet and quite an accomplishment for an author. I highly recommend this book as the first book you purchase on amigurumi. It will give you a good start, use up your yarn stash, and move you towards creating your own designs.

Cute !!! easy to make little amigurumi !!!

These are very cute and easy to crochet. Like the other reviewer said many things are done using a single crochet . The author also has a etsy shop and blog so check those out if you want to see more of her style. What I wanted to know before I bought it was what patterns are included:

Valentine Bears,Baby lion and his daddy, puppy and his daddy, baby monkey and her daddy, baby penguin and her mommy, baby owl and her mommy, baby hedgehog and her mommy, boy and girl elephants, baby octupus and her mommy, mr and mrs cactus, happy eggs, cafe con leche cup , cupcake , ice-cream cone, tiny ami that are: mouse ,bunny,cat,bear,turtle,and duck, also a little pear and a little apple with a worm.

The toys are made with worsted weight yarn size g/6 ,f/5 ,or e/4 hooks.You will also need polyester fiberfill, a tapestry needle, felt and safety eyes or embroidery floss.

I just got it and I have already made 3 bunny a duck and a little egg with a chick inside for easter gifts . They are all super cute don't take much yarn to make and work up fast!!!!

Five Stars..........My favorite Amigurumi Book............

I own this book and also "Amigurumi: Super Happy Cute Crochet" by Elisabeth Doherty, and also "Kyuuto Japanese Crafts: Amugurumi", so it is difficult for me not to compare this book to those. I happen to like this book the best out of the three, but there are aspects of the other books that are superior. In the Kyuuto Book there are very helpful illustrations for each pattern of how/where to attach all of the limbs. This book does not have those illustrations, so getting the exact limb placement is difficult. In the Amugurumi book by Elisabeth Doherty, she gives a color photograph of an actual size "universal gauge swatch" which is marvelous to have. The patterns in this book do not have a particular gauge, although the author does mention that her tension is quite tight, and how many stitches she gets per inch. However, although I know that gauge is not extrememly important for patterns like this, I like having gauge for all patterns that I do, or something like the universal gauge swatch that Elisabeth Doherty provides. Another thing that I like about Elisabeth Doherty's book better than this book is that she provides the exact yarn that she uses for each pattern. This book will simply say "worsted weight yarn in orange", but if you really like the color that is used in the book it would be helpful if she stated the exact brand and color of yarn used, maybe in a resource section at the end of the book. For example, in the Lion Pattern, I really like the shades of gold and orange that the author used, but I am having a difficult time locating them. If she stated the brand and color, I could easily locate these yarns on the internet. Out of the apx. 6 projects I have made (Mommy Owl, Mommy Penguin, Puppy, Happy Eggs, tiny ami duck/bear/rabbit, and Smiling Dessert cup) one pattern is incomplete, the "Cafe Con Leche Cup" from the "Smiling Desserts"; the pattern is only written to round 7, but from what I can tell by looking at the photograph there should be about 15 rounds total. But from my experience, I have yet to find a crochet book without any errors.

Having said all of this though, this is a fantastic little book, and I only wish there were more projects to do! The projects are quick and easy, and very cute. My kids like to look through the book, and tell me what they want me to make, and in fact I am working on the Daddy Lion, and the Little Pear right now. Patterns included in this book are: Valentines Bears (boy and girl bears), baby lion and his daddy, puppy and his daddy, baby monkey and her daddy, baby penguin and her mommy, baby owl and her mommmy, baby hedgehog and her mommy, boy and girl elephants, baby octopus and her mommy, mr. and mrs. cactus, happy eggs, smiling desserts, tiny ami, little pear and little apple with worm.

The author sells other patterns on etsy, I tried to contact her about patterns for house pets, such as guinea pigs, hamsters, hermit crabs, etc...I think these would be really fun to crochet because they could be crocheted to look like a child's pet, but she never responded to me. Oh well! For any amigurumi crochet designers, or publishers out there, I think an amigurumi "pet" book would be a great idea!!!

All in all, very well done! I am really looking forward to another book by this author, and will be the first to pre-order it when it becomes available!

Highly recommended

I read it from front to back and started over again. It is an excellent read on many finance topics with a special emphasis on experiments, implementation and heuristic methods. In spirit it is similar to Brandimarte but takes a somewhat more critical view on the usefullness of false exactitude in financial modelling. I appreciate the book because it does not provide even more - to a large extent intimidating - theory in finance (written for whom actually?). Two suggestions for a future edition:
1. please provide all the codes in Matlab and in R. As a practitioner in portfolio management I find it hard enough to do my programing in Matlab. Simply saying (as in the book) whoever can code in Matlab can also 'easily' translate it into the more obscure R language (and the other way around of course) seems asking too much. The true reason is more likely that one of the authors mostly codes in Matlab and the other in R.
2. some of the visualizations in the book are highly enjoying, some are difficult to read in the printed version of the book. Readers could benefit further if the scripts producing the figures would be available too rather than a library of pure functions.

All in all a must have for the quantitatively minded finance professional.

Avoid.

As an e-book, the format is unreadable. Highlighted equations can't be read. Footnotes seem to be randomly placed amongst text. In parts, equation fonts are twice the size of text and determining if something is an exponent is a sad joke. The print version may be better, but for such an expensive book, we deserve better. I would like my money and time back. Disclosure, I have read about 10% of the book and it is unlikely I will read more.

Choke-full of examples

A great book that is choke-full of _implementable_ examples. As someone with a practical bend that likes to "learn by doing", I find that this book is one of those I'll be referring to constantly for a long time, whenever I'm studying a new concept that I'd like to apply. It saved me plenty of time by not hunting around from different sources since it's all in one place, it's got an extensive literature review for whichever topic I'm looking at and, most importantly, has the code to help me get started.
