In Causing Deaths and Saving Lives Jonathan Glover offers a broadly utilitarian analysis of killing. It is, however, not purely utilitarian; Glover makes room for respecting the autonomy of those who wish to go on living even if we cannot determine what it is that makes their lives worth living (perhaps, though, this grounded in some kind of rule utilitarianism). Indeed, Glover thinks that the wrongness of killing (considered apart from its side-effects on others) is best explained by either the wrongness of overriding of another's autonomy or the wrongness of reducing the total amount of worthwhile life that would otherwise exist if no life-thwarting action were taken. While this classic volume is easy to read, non-technical, honest, and fair, the foundational assumptions seem to me to be flawed.

Consider his definition of death, which he defines as the irreversible loss of consciousness. This, he thinks avoids a problem posed by a thought experiment: imagine a man's heart stops and a doctor is poised to revive him fully expecting to get his heart going again, but the man's heir plunges a knife into his chest before the doctor can do anything. Does the heir violate a corpse or take the life of an innocent human being? Glover writes,

"If, to avoid complications, we assume that the man would otherwise have been revived, the question is one of the boundary between life and death. Making irreversible loss of consciousness the boundary has the advantage, over more traditional criteria, of making the heir's act one of murder." (p. 44).

This is a non sequitur. If by "revived" he means "regained consciousness," the boundary is between consciousness and unconsciousness, not life and death. Consider this: suppose the heir doesn't interfere and the doctor gets the man's heart going again, but unfortunately the man cannot regain consciousness. After the doctor determines that the man's consciousness has been irreversibly lost, the man's heir plunges the knife into the man's chest. Does he violate a corpse or kill a disabled and innocent human being? It seems clear that he doesn't violate a corpse, since we don't think of corpses being able to breath on their own like PVS patients do. Therefore he kills an innocent human being, which means the definition of death includes more than the irreversible loss of consciousness.

With respect to reproductive ethics, he thinks that the actions of killing an infant and failing to conceive a child via contraception are morally on par with another. If one is wrong, then so is the other; and if one is permissible, then so is the other. (Of course, the parity disappears when we start considering the side-effects of these actions on others). This strikes me as incredible for many reasons, but one will suffice. Failing to conceive is on par with infanticide only if we make two implausible assumptions: (1) reducing the total amount of worthwhile life is equivalent with failing to maximize the total amount of worthwhile life; (2) we are under an obligation to maximize the total amount of worthwhile life. A little reflection shows that there are problems with both of these. Since Glover denies any morally relevant difference between acts and omissions, the first assumption entails the following generalization: for any agent S, and any quantifiable property p, S reduces p just in case S fails to maximize p. Thus, if I fail to maximize the potential profits of a company, but produce profits for it nonetheless, I have reduced the company's profits. Conversely, I reduce the total amount of garbage in the world by failing to maximize the total amount of garbage I could otherwise produce. Neither of these statements make much sense of what we normally take the word 'reduce' to mean. To reduce something does not mean to fail to actualize the full potential of something; rather, it means to bring about less of something actual. As for the second assumption, it is hard to make sense of the harm done people who are prevented from existing. Non-existent entities do not have properties, so they cannot be harmed. Perhaps there is a creaturely essence awaiting actualization; but does the failure to actualize it harm it? I doubt it. Why, then, does Glover make these assumptions? As careful as he is to examine his assumptions throughout his interesting and provocative book, these are overlooked.

There is more confusion. Glover spends a lot of time arguing against the act-omission doctrine and the principle of double effect, and we are left with the impression that belief in these ideas is false. But he says, "moral beliefs are not in any straightforward way true or false" (pg. 111), so this noncognitivist turn seems to undercut his argument. Another example of undercutting occurs when he says it is absurd to argue for a moral position by claiming that its widespread rejection would lead to bad consequences (pg. 111), but then goes on to argue that the rejection of the ban on the use of nuclear weapons would produce terrible consequences while recognizing that conventional weapons can be used to cause more harm than nuclear weapons (e.g. he cites the now discredited belief that more people were killed in the conventional bombing of Dresden than in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima).

While Glover's book constitutes a great example the utilitarian challenge to traditional ethics, and is good for assigning to undergraduates to sample various positions, it is not very persuasive.

Philosophy Applied to Real Life

This book is concerned with practical ethics, a very old branch of philosophy with a long history all the way from the Greeks. For the Greeks, philosophy was not an academic affair ---politics and ethics dealt with real problems of the day. That trend withered as time went on. This book applies tools of philosophy to real life problems such as abortion, infanticide, war, and suicide. The most interesting aspect of the book is that it does not push any particular point of view. Instead it takes each problem and describes various attempts to deal with it. For example abortion: some people believe abortion is wrong because the foetus has life and life is sacred, others believe that the foetus's right can be overridden by the right for the mother to make a choice about her own life. Neither position is completely defensible logically and both have their slippery points. Glover takes each of these viewpoints and analyzes its pros and cons. It is up to the reader to understand these arguments and make a judgement about where they stand. This is the best book to understand controversial issues such as infanticide, capital punishment and abortion without getting caught up in false rhetoric. Once you read this book, you will see these issues differently; with less surety and more humility.

Great examples of marketing campaigns

As a mobile marketer, I am always on the look out for books that will give other creative ideas that I can present to the my clients. This book provided much inspiration and it showed me just how much potential and versatility there is in the mobile marketing world.
It also showed me that mobile marketing is so much more than just text messaging, even though a large portion of the book seems to talk of text messaging. As a basic introduction to mobile marketing I think this is a winner. The resource list in the back also has been very helpful to me. this book has many good information on the rock bearing,lateral pressure problem of the pile. specially In my case, chapter 6 was very helpful to over come the unbalanced surcharge problem at the silo foundation.

Kay Hoover and I are proud to have been pioneers in the lactation field. We realized very early on that our fledgling profession lacked professional educational resources. We picked up cameras and began to document the things we saw in our practices. This became the genesis for the Atlas. The Breastfeeding Atlas

I consider this book fascinating. Each chapter contains paragraphs that refer to pictures in the back of the book, which lets you know exactally what you are reading about. This is the best resource I have ever seen for learning. It was recommended to me by experienced Lactation Consultants. The consultants said the half of the Lactation Exam Boards are pictures.

I have read a LOT of books in prep for my IBLCE exam this year (and have for several years). This book was not what I expected. I was hoping that the wealth of pictures in this book would help me with studying. It's a lot of flipping back and forth from descriptions to pictures and back.

The Brutality of Bacon

I was always given to understand that Francis Bacon was notoriously closed-mouthed, especially when it came to his painting technique, unwilling to disclose the origin and meaning of his mysterious and disturbing images. This collection of interviews, however, totally belies that notion, wherever I might have acquired it.

"The Brutality of Fact" is a rich treasure trove gleaned from a series of discussions between the master artist and one of his most perceptive and sympathetic critics. Obviously, this book will therefore be invaluable to those who appreciate Bacon's work, but it is equally invaluable to anyone interested in art, art theory, and the creative process in general.

As an interlocutor, David Sylvester asks the questions you'd want asked; for his part, Bacon is as forthright and forthcoming in answering them as you could hope him to be.

From the images and artists that obsess him to the way he "throws" paint and rubs out images, from the role of chance in both his work and his life to the way he manipulates the accidents he encourages, Bacon seems to be holding nothing back. He speaks plainly of his goal as an artist and what he feels to be the goal of every serious artist: to rework reality by artificial means to create a new vision of the world truer and more intense than anything ever seen before. And he offers an insightful and incisive critique of what he perceives to be the shortcomings of abstract art, which eschews the world of objects altogether, and illustrative realism, which is simply redundant in an era with ample means of mechanical reproduction. His discussion of these two extreme attitudes towards the phenomenal world and his explanation of the way his own art seeks to mediate between the two are in themselves worth the price and time this book costs you to read.

One of the best books by or about an artist that I've ever read, I found myself underlining passage after passage for future reference and inspiration. I don't think it too much to say that "The Brutality of Fact" amounts to a mini-course in modern art by one of it's most profoundly committed and surprisingly eloquent practitioners--a book that will open your eyes in more ways than one.

Still one of the most fascinating books on the nature of creativity ever published.

This is the most recent and expanded edition of the book, which by now has become a classic work that really transcends the "interview with a famous artist" label. I own an earlier edition of the book that I have virtually memorized, so the new additions and expansions David Sylvester has included stand out for me, and amplify the original edition considerably. Whether or not you are a fan of Francis Bacon's painting, the book offers Bacon's insights (as well as Sylvester's) on the very nature of creativity, obsession, and what drives artists of any kind (painter, poet, composer, etc.) to devote their lives to their chosen pursuits. Plus, Bacon's rather sulphurous personality and opinions are captured vividly on the page, through Sylvester's obvious freindship and fascination with the man. An absolutely essential, and rather unique book...over the years, I have been amazed at how many people I have met, from all areas of the arts, who have found this work a source of inspiration and endless fascination.

Invaluable Chronicle of a Tortured Artist

"Interviews with Francis Bacon" (1987) captures remarkably on paper the tortured mind of the famous British painter (1909-1992). It belongs on the shelf of every Bacon fan and artist, regardless of medium. Nine interviews range from 1962 to 1986, Bacon's fifties through his seventies, in the form of interactive conversations with art historian David Sylvester (British, 1924-2001), ranging from Bacon's frustrated youth to his unique artistic techniques, the meaning of art to the meaning of life. Sylvester cleverly steers toward topics Bacon finds interesting, allowing him to discuss them at length. (Some of the original audio may be sampled at BBC4's website, though this book's text was heavily edited and re-manipulated from those recordings.)
The final chapter is the most biographical. Bacon, 77, recaps his life and career in detail, including his "coming out," at a time homosexuality was illegal in Britain, the relationship with his intolerant father coming to an end as a result. Overall, the book forms a clear portrait of an intellectually restless artist, demonized by the struggle to express satisfactorily the horrific images which constantly stream into his head. There is no overarching structure to the book, thus many interviews cover the same ground different ways, with illuminating results. Bacon's answers usually reinforce or embellish what was said earlier, but he sometimes answers the same question differently over time, demonstrated for example by his increasing dislike for "drink and drugs."
Some themes persist throughout. Chronically anxious and hypertensive, he can never sit still, never relax. Not religious, Bacon believes "man is an accident, a futile being, he must play out the game without reason," and life has only whatever meaning we give it, yet his haunted soul clearly identifies with the tragedy of the Crucifixion, which he considers the perfect narrative of the mythic "tragic hero," and the ultimate symbol of human devotion despite life's vicissitudes. (One famous Bacon work metaphorically depicts a hypodermic syringe stuck into the subject's arm, representing a nail stuck into the hand). He is similarly affected by the open-mouthed cry of human agony, which he expresses in perhaps his most famous and retold obsession, the many horrifying studies of Velazquez's portrait of Pope Innocent X.
Too human, he is concerned with posterity, and denies himself the comfort of calling himself a "painter." He believes an artist must "solve the problem" of art to be a success, which to him means they must render the known through the unknown, or create the "illustrative" and "narrative" through the use of the "irrational." Discussing Picasso in this light, he says he finds surrealism "more real" than realism, probably meaning he finds surrealism more directly communicates the human condition. He also believes strongly in figuration, slaying abstract art with one devastating word: "Fashion!" He seems burdened by a lack of proper training, having started his career as an interior designer, especially when discussing the trials of his studio work, describing the way he tosses paint at the canvas, the way he tries not to work a canvas too much, potentially ruining it, and the conflicted feelings he holds toward works he has already painted, or those he is still painting.
The book usefully reproduces many works in small black-and-white images at times when the conversation turns to them, both Bacon's works and those of others, like Picasso and Rembrandt. The lack of color is entirely unnoticed, as the book focuses on the artist's psychology and opinion, which these plates illustrate perfectly. (Full-color reproduction would probably also have made the book needlessly expensive). Most remarkably, of all the photographs and self-portraits in the book, Bacon never looks directly at the viewer, illustrating most strikingly his natural over-sensitivity and tortured self-denial.
Bacon has said "art is completely a game by which man distracts himself," and "the artist must really deepen the game in order to be worth anything at all." If anyone feels Bacon "played the game" well, and "distracts" successfully his audience, or that he was "worth anything at all," then this book belongs in that person's library.

About the Author
The author and editor of numerous books and articles in the areas of ethics and social and political philosophy, William H. Shaw obtained a Ph.D. in political philosophy from the London School of Economics and teaches philosophy at San Jose State University, where he served as chair of the department for eleven years. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Zimbabwe, the University of Hong Kong, and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Indeed, he boldly claimed that she had been a princess, notwithstanding her peasant origin and her distinctly demi-monde existence.

And although now largely forgotten, in the years immediately after her death, Marie's legend if anything grew in stature, with her immortalization in Verdi's La traviata, an opera in which the great Romantic composer tried to capture her essence in some of the most heart-wrenching and lyrical music ever composed.

About the Author

Rene Weis is a freelance author and a professor of English at UCL. He has a written on a wide variety of subjects, including Edith Thompson (of the infamous 'Thompson and Bywaters' murder case in the 1920s), the last Cathar insurgency in the Pyrenees in the Middle Ages, and a biography of Shakespeare. As a professional Shakespearian, he has published extensively on Shakespeare and Renaissance drama, his publications including editions of Romeo and Juliet, King Lear, Henry IV Part 2, and an Oxford World Classics edition of the works of John Webster. A lifelong lover of opera, he also contributes regular pieces to the programmes for Royal Opera House productions.

The Real Traviata and the Men Who Immortalized Her

I knew that La Traviata was connected to the Alexander Dumas fils book The Lady of the Camellias (La Dame aux camelias) but I didn't know there was a real woman behind the stories, Marie Duplessis, born Alphonse Plessis.

The Real Traviata: The Song of Marie Duplessis by Rene Weis reveals the woman and the men who loved her and presents a history of the transcendent art that has made her immortal. Alexander Dumas fils was one of her lovers; his novel inspired by Marie's short life arrived soon after her death. It became a play, and that play inspired Verdi to throw out his nearly completed project to write La Traviata--all within four years of Marie's death.

The book, play, and opera met with resistance getting past the censors. Marie was a courtesan, one with class and style and regal bearing whose lovers included men from the highest ranks of life. Marie's protector had her educated, paid for her housing, and availed himself of her love even while knowing she had at least one other lover on the side. Some courtesans of the day were quite wild and profane but Marie had the bearing, soul, heart and generosity of a high born lady. Dumas loved her but was too poor and had to give her up. Liszt was on concert tours and couldn't bring her with him; he left the first woman he ever loved behind in Paris.

Impoverished Girls Preyed On by Men

Weis takes us into the disturbing history of prostitution and child abuse in the early 19th c. Marie's childhood was tragic and horrifying. Her drunkard and abusive father forced Marie's mother into hiding for her life, leaving her two daughters with family. Marie's surrogate family could barely feed themselves and when Marie was ten she was told she had to find her own food. At some point she was trading sexual favors for food.

She was a beautiful girl with skin like Camellias, and with dark eyes and hair. Starved for food and love, Marie later confessed that she had enjoyed the attention of the men. After her father found and reclaimed his daughters he himself abused Marie and when she was thirteen sold her favors to a local pedophile. Shortly afterwards she had her first menses. Weis cites an 1857 study by Ambroise Tradieu who first revealed the pervasiveness of sexual child abuse and rape. Men from the highest classes picked up teenaged girls and indulged themselves without thought.

Marie as Pretty Woman

That Marie, like other young girls who were abused and raped, became a prostitute was ordained by such a childhood. She was smart; to avoid the dangers of the streets she sought a protector. At age 16 she found her protector in Morny, a Bonaparte. Just six years before she was starving; now had a home of her own, enough to eat, and lovely clothes to wear. Her lover paid for her education--reading and writing, piano, dancing, everything needed for her to move among the highest classes of society. (Think Pretty Woman or Pygmalion or My Fair Lady.) Her protector even fell in love with her. At age 17 Marie gave birth and was sent to her country hometown to recover; Morny took the baby, who died. Marie didn't learn of her baby's death until a year later.

Queen of the Night

Morny left Paris for a position with the government and his friend took his place keeping Marie. By then she was a real trophy mistress. She had a series of generous lovers, protectors who paid for her upkeep while seeing other men. Marie lived the high life abroad and at home, enjoying the opera and gambling and waltzing through life. Then Marie met Edouard de Perregaux, a serial womanizer, romantic and feckless. He became the man immortalized as Alfredo, Violetta's lover in Verdi's opera. Their affair had ups and downs, marriage and estrangement.

Edouard saw that Marie was a 'pearl lost in vice', a kind and romantic woman. He moved her out of Paris to keep her to himself for a while. He had his own checkered past and was involved with another courtesan and actress. They idyll didn't last. Back in Paris Marie had to juggle the man paying for her keep and her lovers. She had to think of her future when her older protector would die; any of these lovers could be taking his place. Although Edouard may have loved Marie he was in debt and his family pressured him to give her up.

Marie was an exceptional woman, especially considering her profession and childhood. One day a woman and with her son struck up a conversation with Marie. The ladies hit it off but Marie felt the need to confess she was a courtesan. The woman had seen Marie's soul and remained a lifetime friend. Marie donated money for an orphanage and raised even more from her friends.

Marie eventually became involved with a 'manager' and had men lining up at her door. She lived in splendor and it took a lot of money to keep up appearances. Her most notorious love affairs at this time included Alexander Dumas fils and Franz Liszt. Dumas was the first to note symptoms of T.B. in Marie.

Death and Transfiguration

Marie's tuberculosis claimed her life in 1847 when she was only 23 years old. She had been estranged from Edouard and wouldn't let him see her. She wouldn't ask for help from friends. She spent her last days sitting at the window in her empty suite. Her possessions were sold at auction. Dumas purchased back a necklace he had given Marie; his daughter wore it to her grave. She was buried in a temporary unsanctified grave until Edouard had her reburied with a tomb. He insisted on opening the coffin to be sure it was Marie. His last image would be her already decaying face.

Almost immediately the low-born courtesan was turned into an angelic soul, starting with her obituary. Dumas wrote The Lady of the Camellias; he revealed the seamy side of Parisian society, an unflinching look at the world of the prostitute and the men who frequented them. After getting past the censors he turned the book into a play. It too was unable to pass the censors until Marie's former lover and protector used his governmental power to approve its performance. And then Verdi attended the play and immediately starting writing the music of La Traviata, even before he had a libretto.Verdi was not married to his companion and understood social prejudice; they too had tried to hide in the country. Verdi had lost a wife and children and understood grief. The opera allowed him to deal with his personal losses.

The story of the abused child who inspired one of our most beloved operas is fascinating and disturbing. While reading the section about the opera's performance history I was able to find clips on YouTube and other online sites. The book is illustrated showing the people and places of Marie's history. It was a fascinating read.

Great Christmas Present!

“Marie Duplessis deserved to live on in ways that lay beyond the reach of words, in the most powerful medium of all, music.” This sentence from page 272 accurately sums up the huge emotional impact of this book. The parallels with the story of Saddayako, the Geisha who became immortalised in Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly, kept reverberating in my mind as I became progressively drawn in by the sensitive way in which Ren� Weis does justice to his subject. The critics who were outraged by the immortalisation of a fallen woman are acknowledged. Weis hides nothing. Indeed, he is a far more nuanced and therefore effective critic himself of the morals of the Parisian world in which Marie Duplessis lived. But he also conveys the charm and humanity of Marie, who naturally sought the marriage that could offer her the only viable means of escape from her predicament. I challenge anyone not to be moved by this book. It is also meticulously researched, with important new scholarly discoveries. Great Christmas present!

The Real Traviata

This is a thoroughly researched and extremely detailed biography of the life of Marie Duplessis. Even if you have not heard of her, you will know the opera, La Traviata and the character of Violetta Valery was based upon the short, tragic, rags to riches, real life of story of Marie Duplessis; as was the novel, “La Dame aux Camelias,” by Alexandre Dumas, fils, which was later turned into a play in 1849. What made the story of this ‘Lady of the Camelias,’ this, “fallen woman,” so fascinating that her story became a sensation which is still played out on stages throughout the world even today?

It has to be said that, if you wanted to create a character you felt sympathy for, it would be hard to imagine anyone feeling anything other than compassion for the young Alphonsine Plessis (she later took her mother’s first name) who was the second daughter of poverty stricken parents in 1824. After her father attempted to kill her beloved mother, the family were split up and young Alphonsine was told at the age of only ten that the family she was living with would no longer feed her. Little wonder that this young girl, reduced to begging, was at the mercy of inappropriate attention from adults, as she drifted alone and seemingly unwanted. You would think that, having rediscovered her father, things might improve; but sadly, Alphonsine was destined to be misused by those who should have been protecting her.

The author does an excellent job of not only telling us the story of Marie Duplessis, but also of recreating the times shelived in. Alphonsine was a young lady who used her looks and intelligence to become a glamorous courtesan, who had several wealthy, influential protectors and who went from working in a laundry (and worse) to being at home in the echelons of Parisian society. In the times when Alphonsine was living in Paris (1838 to 1847), the city was hedonistic and full of great art, music and glamour.

This is a story of aristocratic splendour, of the famous – such as Alexandre Dumas and Liszt – and of terrible tragedy. Not only of the death of a young woman, but of a life which burned so brightly that was almost like a match – destined to flare and then be cruelly snuffed out. However, despite everything, you have to applaud this young woman who was abused, abandoned and rejected, but who used her assets of beauty and intelligence to rise way above the life she expected to live and to become the talk of Paris. This really is a very detailed work, but it beautifully recreates both the life of Mari Duplessis and of the era she lived in, plus looking at the success of the works based upon her story after her death. A very interesting read and an excellent biography. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.
