Markheim" is a short story by Robert Louis Stevenson, originally prepared for the Pall Mall Gazette in 1884, but published in 1885 in The Broken Shaft: Tales of Mid-Ocean as part of Unwin's Christmas Annual. The story was later published in Stevenson's collection The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables (1887). The creature in the story could either be an agent of the devil or Markheim's own conscience, writes Stevenson biographer Claire Harmon. In 1884 Stevenson likely read Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment which greatly affected him and, although the story draws on the themes and plot of Dostoyevsky's work, Harman believes the piece to be wholly original in that Stevenson incorporates an element of the supernatural in the story. Like much of Stevenson's other work, the story shows Stevenson's preoccupation with the nature of duality.

Take some time for Markheim

In classic Stevenson style, Markheim explores the very nature of man and his (our) double-sided conscience. Stevenson demonstrates his mastery of language and writing by skillfully slowing down the scene and allowing the reader to see and feel the ticking of the clocks and the passage of time - in the room and on the street. Harkening to the old cliche of the devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other, Markheim must examine his morality, his deeds, and battle his conscience for the sake of his very life and soul.

This is a quick, and easy read. The vocabulary and syntax are not too deep and the pace of the story makes it truly engaging. The story is in the public domain and is most certainly available online but at this price, the Kindle editon is a bargain indeed. I've read it again and again, and I find something new every time.

In my opinion this is a great short story, where there is the ABC of a short story plus religious dogmas with references to a famous play written by William Shakespeare.
The contrast between the dealer and Markheim is immediate and powerful, this is configurable by the exchange of their discourses.

In the first pages of this tale, there is a reference, or better a similitude to Ebenezer Scrooge (Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens) regarding two key points, the emotional transformation after the supernatural visitations of Jacob Marley, and the ghosts of Christmases, past, present, and yet to come, and most importantly the lack of the Christmas spirit, a ploy for to introduce a fundamental Christian's dogma i.e. the equation that the money are the devil's excrement; this concept has been introduced inside the plot using the phrase at the beginning and at the end: The Stock Exchange.

In my opinion "the visitor" is the conscience of Markheim, that has been absorbed and corrupted by his madness due to his thirsty of money.

Thinking profoundly on this character, I would like to mention that there is a clear reference to a famous play written by William Shakespeare, i.e. Macbeth for instance the "Banquet Scene" and the emersion of his madness. The main cause for their homicides, is the epic conflict between their free will and their conscience, and their fear of being punished by the divine and terrestrial laws.

In conclusion Stevenson even in a short story is able to philosophising.

In this case I can assume that as readers we have been led to believe and eventually say that the finance is a sin.

An excellent update of an excellent guide.Works well On Kindle. Good value for money

This the updated version of the Stuart's popular " Field Guide to Mammals of Southern Africa."
In now includes Angola, Zambia and Malawi.
The book is significantly larger-- I by just over 150 pages.
I have both the older Kindle edition and this newer one

The animal descriptions are excellent
Basic details
It starts with a brief summary in a green shaded box.
It gives the animal's common name and zoolological name.
Next length,height at shoulder,weight of male/female. If the animal has horns, details are given.. ( photos often show the horns, and there may be a shot of a young male ( no horns) and a mature male.)
Main pointers to identification are carefully summarised.
( later on the animal's footprint is given and their height off the ground compared to a shadow adult man )
There is a distribution map of the animals current range, a number of maps note the historic range in a different colour.

Horns
These are usually shown in the photos.
However some entries also get line diagrams of horns at various ages. Examples include
Black Wildebeest horns at 6, 12,24, 36 and 48 months.
The Greater Kudu, whose horns have a beautiful spiral are possibly the most beautiful. In the mature bull there is a "double "spiral These changes are shown from 9 months to that of a mature Bull in its prime in some 6 stages that take well over30 months plus
Horn structure that change with time are shown for some other antelope. I found these diagrams interesting.

Photos
The photos are excellent.Where a number of books have one , there are often several.
Where there is a difference between male and female this is often shown.
Shots of mother's with young are fairly frequent.. Some antelope hide their young for a period after their birth. In the section on Puku , there is a good photo of a Puku lamb curled up hidden in longish grass.
Important points of identification are captured in the shots, in some cases to make sure you got the point, a clear detail shot or inset is included-- the black stripe on the Impala's buttock area., or the black blaze on the face of the Black faced Impala.-- I could pick more difficult examples , but this is just to make a point about their attention to detail and keenness for you to grasp the details better. ( I am currently struggling to get clear in my mind various antelope,bucks and bocks etc and I have found both their descriptions and pictures very helpful.)
The photos are of a good size. They upscale well on the IPad
Descriptions
The descriptions give details on animal identification,distribution, habitat, behaviour, food, social features, reproduction, longevity etc.
These descriptions are fairly full and certainly informative.

Summary.
There is a very useful A--Z common animal name linked access at the front of the book.
If you want Zebra, push Zebra.
If you want Hyraxes push Hyraxes and so on.
The Stuart's have continued to improve their excellent guide.
It now includes Angola, Zambia and Malawi. New species from these areas are included in the book.-- sorry I am still tracking them down.
What makes the book for me-- the plentiful and excellent photos often showing male / female shots and some female shots may have the female with their offspring. Helpful shot of points of identification are often included.
Almost as good is their text which covers many matters you want to know about as you get to know the animals better.
All in all , this is an excellent book .
It works well on my IPad Kindle Reader.

Excellent field guide. Might be a little too heavy to carry in the field, but it would be an excellent reference to peruse when back in camp. I'm looking forward to using it.

About the Author

A rare masterpiece, updated

I'm unusually attached to this book: I laid my hands on the earlier edition as a very young child, and it probably shaped my interests more than anything else - ultimately setting me on a very interesting and rewarding life path. I've gotten the 1998 edition for my eldest son when he was perhaps four, and it's been his favorite for many years now.

In the end, "The Way Things Work" is quite simply spectacular, packed with information about the world around us, funny, accessible, and inspiring. While there are one or two illustrations that aren't as clear as they should have been, and a minor error creeps up here and there, it's still a magnificent piece of work born out of true passion and skill. If you have a technically inclined young kid, chances are, you will not regret buying them this.

As for the updated 2016 edition: compared to the 1998 version, the changes are incremental but fairly substantial, with a treatment of e-paper displays, digital cameras, accelerometers, and so on. Some of this may make you nostalgic - say, a mechanically simpler optical mouse takes place of the rolling ball design - but overall, it's a much-needed and worthwhile reboot.

It's a book to entertain minds and satisfy curiosity

I learned this edition of the book on a NPR interview with the author recently and immediately placed a pre-sale order on Amazon. It arrived the 3rd day after it went on sales. These days while everything and anything can be found online through Google or Bing search by a few keywords, knowledge and information seem cheap and vast, but rarely pure and condensed like what are provided in this book. Turning the pages, there are beautifully hand-drawn schematics and pictures to illustrate how things around us work, clear and simple,complimented with easy-to-understand English to explain in details what's not covered by drawings.The book covers wide range of topics from how a key works to what makes a scanner ticking. It explains extremely well the physics, mechanical engineering, electronics, etc in things that surround our modern daily life. No question about it, such book should be had by every family, every school library, or everywhere education, especially STEM education, is in need. Oh, yeah, it is also entertaining and artistically appealing.

I have all of his books, but this one seems to be very, very technical. Much more geared to middle or high school -- or adults who are already technically inclined. Seems like he lost the fun on the original book. I will continue to use the previous version for my students.
