PREFACE

This casebook is intended to be used as a companion to the textbook Introduction to Materials Management. However, its usefulness is not limited to this particular text. The cases are designed as examples of the problems that production and inventory management professionals face throughout their working lives.

Students of these cases are typically undergraduates in an introductory course, but the cases also could be used in an introductory course in the master's program, especially with supplemental questions.

This casebook is written to take the student beyond the problems included in Introduction to Materials Management. Most chapters have cases, and some cases bridge more than one chapter. Also, the cases vary in level of difficulty, with the more challenging cases requiring the student to think about the management issues involved in their decisions on the job. In all cases, the student has to think beyond the pure "formula application" problem typically found in many textbooks. Generally, the cases will force students to apply multiple concepts and to consider the solution in the context of the situation as opposed to merely finding an answer.

Each of us brings to this Introduction to Materials Management Casebook extensive experience in manufacturing and many years of full-time teaching. We welcome your feedback on the content in this text.

About the Author

Karen Kleiman, MSW, is a licensed clinical social worker and founder and director of The Postpartum Stress Center. She is the author of several books on postpartum depression, and an internationally recognized expert on the subject. In addition to her clinical practice, Karen teaches a specialized post-graduate course for clinicians, providing training programs for healthcare professionals and mentoring opportunities for therapists who wish to specialize in the treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

Amy Wenzel, PhD, is author and editor of many books on topics such as cognitive therapy, cognitive research methods, and close relationships. Her areas of research and clinical expertise and in perinatal anxiety disorders, interpersonal functioning in anxiety disorders, suicide prevention, and cognitive therapy. She lectures nationally on issues relevant to mental health and psychotherapy. She currently divides her time between scholarly research, training and consultation, and clinical practice.

This book saved my life!

I had heard about the baby blues and postpartum depression. I think most women are briefed about it at some point during pregnancy and right after childbirth, but what I (and I suspect most who go through this) experienced was a million times worse and much different from what I had heard. I think it's a shame that more isn't done to educate women about what may happen to them after they give birth. I was completely petrified by the feelings and thoughts that I was having. And I was even more terrified of what would happen if I told anyone about it. I thought my child would be taken from me if I tried to describe the horrible, horrible, horrible things going through my mind. Yet, at the same time, I was afraid to be alone with my child, thinking that if I could think things I did not want to think, what would stop me from doing things I didn't want to do. I was convinced that there was something more wrong with me than simple postpartum depression because I had never heard of anyone having the kind of thoughts I was having and having them constantly.

This book helped me understand that I really was experiencing what many, many women go through. I can't explain how relieved I was to find I was not alone. It also helped me share what I had been trying to go through alone for over three months. I literally took the book to my husband and said that I needed to talk to him, but I wanted him to read a few key passages from the book first. He completely understood, and I was so much more relieved not to be alone with my thoughts anymore.

Of course the book wasn't responsible for a full recovery, but it made me realize that I had to speak with a doctor and a therapist. I did (and still do) need medication, but I was able to work through a lot of problems with my therapist in a few months. Mindfulness practices also helped a lot. But it was this book that was my lifeline when I felt that I was going through the coldest, harshest hell imaginable.

This is a very comprehensive book that delves deeply into the widely taboo subject of Postpartum Depression and all of its counterparts. To date there is not an abundance of research based literature on the condition, nor are there many resources with respect to treatment that takes affectionate aim at Postpartum Depression.. This book is really a gem with respect to the conditions, no matter if the driving engine is postpartum depression, anxiety or OCD that is written in a way that is simple yet also includes a head nod to clinicians at the end of each chapter with a "take away" summary for therapists. The one caution that I would put out there is that if you are in the eye of the storm so to speak - meaning if you are really struggling in particular with 'intrusive thoughts' (the really, really scary thoughts often about harm) I understand that you are probably desperately looking for answers and help, however tread carefully with this book and realize that some of the sections may be too much for you to read and can be very triggering. The authors are really good about giving a forewarning when the content is about to become difficult, yet you still have to use your own intuition and check in with yourself. If it starts at any point feeling hard to read (like it did for me) put it down and revisit it when you feel better about it. With that said it is a wealth of knowledge on the subject and for what it is worth it does help to know that whatever it is you are thinking, no matter how monstrous, or feeling, no matter how frightening, this book is confirmation that IT HAS been thought or felt before.

So thankful for this book

As a mother hit with PPD out of nowhere 3 months after my 3rd child, this book has been absolutely invaluable. I was paralyzed with fear and anxiety, and bought this book hoping for some clarity on the phenomenon of unwanted thoughts. I wasn't just reassured I wasn't alone: they spoke to EVERY SINGLE THING I had experienced! I felt understood, comforted, and equipped by what they wrote. Along with Scripture, this book got me through the roughest patch I've ever been in. It took me from ashamed and paralyzed to educated and empowered. I highly recommend every OB read this as well.

Great balance between theory, motivation and practice.

I used this book in grad school to study up on numerical approximations. In my engineering career, subsequently, I've read other books on the topic but have finally come back to this one. This book is so well organized and thought out that it is a pleasure to read. It also contains the right level of theoretical and practical information that is needed for someone comfortable with math. The book does not go into details on finite-precision arithmetic so you'll need a complementary book for that if those issues are relevant for you.

Even if you don't _need_ to know this stuff it is still really interesting and worth reading about. This is the right book at the right level for doing that.

An inspiring story about following one's heart.

Serafina, a young Haitian girl, wants more than anything to go to school to become a doctor. But her dream seems impossible when she has to spend all day doing chores to help her mother who is about to have another baby. It was the loss of a previous baby and the efforts of a female doctor to prevent it that have inspired Serafina to want to be a doctor. But everything seems to be preventing Serafina from even pursuing her dream: natural disasters, lack of money, and unending chores. Can Serafina find a way to survive and pursue her dream?

Not only is the poetry beautifully written but it's surprisingly evocative as well. One of the things that verse can do so well is express the feelings of the characters and Burg does a fabulous job of this. I really felt like I knew Serafina and her dreams and worries, heartaches and joys. In a relatively few words, I also found myself sympathizing with Serafina's parents; Manman who worries so much and Papa, who works so hard to provide for his family and still finds reasons to smile. The characterization is beautifully and tenderly presented.

In terms of plot, the story is appealing to me because it highlights the value of an education. Ironically, it also portrays the fact that sometimes when we get what we want, it isn't always what we thought it would be and yet it's the only way to get to where we want to go. The presentation of the natural disasters is thoughtfully and powerfully done despite the sparse use of words, I got a distinct feel for the circumstances Serafina and her family found themselves in. Not that there is any real way to understand what that's like without being there, but this comes close.

Overall, a beautifully written and presented story about dreams and overcoming the odds. The only problem I foresee here is the format. Most children won't pick up free verse stories, still if one or two will pick it up I think they will be well rewarded for their efforts.

Using Serafina's Promise in the Classroom

Burg’s novel-in-verse is perfect for younger students. As we’ve said with almost every novel-in-verse we’ve read for Vamos a Leer, this is a great format for developing, struggling, or hesitant readers. All of the white space on each page keeps readers from being overwhelmed. The dialogue is simple which minimizes any frustration for a reader trying to track who is talking. But it’s not just the genre that makes is a good choice for younger students. Haiti’s history is both traumatic and violent, some of which continues to manifest in the present. For those of you familiar with other young adult novels like Krik? Krak! and In Darkness, Serafina’s Promise may seem like a fairy tale version of life in Haiti. While Burg alludes to the traumatic history, it’s not nearly as explicit as in some of the other above-mentioned young adult novels. While this can certainly be a critique of the book, I also think that this is one of the reasons it can be useful in the classroom. Novels like In Darkness and Krik? Krak! are excellent resources for both the teaching of quality writing and realistic portrayals of life in Haiti. But we can’t use these books with our elementary school students. For most of these students, even if the reading level isn’t too advanced or the books are used as read alouds, the themes aren’t appropriate. Burg provides a novel about Haiti that we can use with younger students. She allows us to introduce these students to Haiti so that they can learn about a country rarely mentioned in our classrooms and begin to think about what life might be like there.

One of the more powerful pieces of the novel is in the experience the reader can have in comparing his or her life with that of Serafina. Serafina’s circumstances are so different from what many of our students are familiar with in the U.S. Things that many of us take for granted in our daily lives in the U.S., are not remotely available to Serafina, her family, or her neighbors. While our education system in the U.S. is anything but perfect, schooling is available for everyone. It’s important for our students to realize that education is not a guarantee in other countries. In Haiti the cost of an education is something that many cannot afford. Students need to reflect on what the ramifications are when a country doesn’t provide education for its entire population. What does it mean if many are left illiterate? How does the lack of an education affect the quality of one’s life? Would our students work as hard as Serafina does in order for the chance to go to school? While Serafina’s childhood will be difficult, if not impossible, for many of our students to truly grasp, it’s important that they try. They need to imagine a life without TVs, video games, cell phones, electricity, or even running water.

A more universal theme in the novel may be the family dynamics and relationships. While Serafina is close to both her father and her grandmother, she struggles to connect with her mother. Relationships, especially those with family members, can be complex. As Serafina realizes, some of her inability to understand her mother is related to her mother’s fearfulness and anxiety that comes from her own traumatic childhood experiences. A discussion around the nature of the family’s relationships in the novel can provide the space for students to think about and possibly share connections that they see to their own lives. I also really appreciated the way Burg wove in explicit discussions of emotions. As I’ve talked about before, emotions are something that we discuss far too little in our classrooms, especially when we consider how much they influence the ways in which we process our experiences. Serafina experiences a wide range of emotions. Burg addresses not only the positive ones such as happiness, joy, and hopefulness, but also the ones we are less likely to address in classroom discussions such as anger, frustration, and jealousy. I found her use of “angry bees” to be a potentially powerful way to model for students one way to process emotions through creating a metaphor to describe the way their emotions make them feel.
While Burg may not explicitly address the more violent aspects of historical and contemporary life in Haiti, she does allude to these things, which provides the teacher the opportunity to delve deeper. Serafina’s struggle to understand why they learn French instead of Creole in school is one example of this. Serafina knows that the French conquered Haiti, and she questions why they continue to learn in the language of their conquerors instead of Creole, the language the majority of people speak. This creates a way to open up a discussion about conquest and colonization and the contemporary ways in which people continue to be colonized.

While it may not be as realistic as other young adult novels set in Haiti, it’s still a novel I’d recommend for the classroom. Not only does it provide an age appropriate introduction to Haiti, but it does this through a strong protagonist who is a female of color, something that is sadly still lacking in much of our classroom literature. In the end, Serafina’s Promise is a message of hope in contrast to the harsh reality of life in Haiti.

Serafina lives in poverty stricken villages outside of Port-au-Prince, trying to fulfill a promise to herself and to her long-gone Grandpere to go to school. Her Grandpere believed "education is the road to freedom". Her goal is to become a Doctor one day, like Antionette Solaine, and help her Maman's babies live. Serafina struggles not only to live, but to find the money needed for her to attend school and to convince her Maman that she should go. With a small herb garden which her Gogo helps her with, and her father's persuasive skills put to work on her Maman, Serfaina starts school. She sees her name written for the first time, "I trace the loops and lines with my fingers. Serafina. My name. My beautiful, beautiful name". Hope and hardship go hand in hand. Serafina plays with Julie-Marie and Nadia and sneaks scarce food to Banza, the stray dog of their village. Yet Nadia's ability to attend school leads to jealousy and bitterness. Then Serafina loses Julie-Marie's cheerful outlook when her friend is sent to live with relatives after tragedy strikes. The birth of her brother Gregory provides their family with joy, but when the baby takes ill Serafina fears it is her selfish desire to attend school and the money it costs, which keeps him from receiving the care he needs. Serafina's attempts to help are shaken up by a natural disaster where her hope and determination lead her back to her loved ones. Written in lilting, lyrical verse sprinkled with French and Haitian Creole giving it the flavor and rhythm of island life, Serafania's story shines with promise as she tries to pursue her dreams. The political background of Haiti is touched on briefly in a discussion about the Tonton Macoute. A glossary of foreign terms and phrases is provided along with a Haitian Creole pronunciation guide.

An entertaining, if dated, review of King's early work

Part Biography and part review of King's literary and film works (up to the mid 80s at least), this book was very interesting. The author is an avowed King fan, so it is not a surprise that he praises everything King wrote up to that point (of course, all that stuff was awesome, so I can't fault the author for that).

I learned a few things from the book, including the fact that the Dark Tower series was expected to be released as a large collection of short stories (The Gunslinger is a collection of 5 related short stories, though now we just consider them all one book). There are several references to The Cannibals, including its original title "Under the Dome," which it eventually retook when it was published recently. I found the most interesting aspect of the book was finding out when King wrote everything (books weren't necessarily written in published order and some of the story collections were written over many many years).

I'd like to read an updated version of this book, bringing in all the work he's done over the 25 years since this book came out.

Winter, who has spent a lifetime delving into the works of the grandmaster of horror, featuring King's own interpretation of his works as well as the influences that went into the writing of the novels, including the prevailing topical concerns of society that found its way into the works, as well as the personal problems faced by King that are reflected in the characters he creates; in particular, The Shining - which reflects King's struggle for recognition amidst a Cocainne and booze addiction coupled with intense feelings of rage which he successfully suppressed.

This study deals with all major works by the author, including movie adaptations and works in progress and incorporates a bibliography featuring upcoming novels and movie adaptations that are scheduled for future production, and represents a comprehensive study of the works of one of the most prolific and influential writers of popular fiction.

Highly recommended for King fans

"Winter has taught me things about the novels of Stephen King, just when I was no longer sure that was possible." -Peter Straub on the back cover.
I bought this book soon after it was published in the late 1980s. Even though it is 30 years old, it's an excellent survey of the first part of King's writing career. Winter writes very well, and brings a scholarly analysis to his essays. He discusses the influences on King's books and short stories - literary and popular culture alike - and the political and social undercurrents in his ideas and characters.

A pursuit that didn't finish strong

When I started the book I was pleasantly surprised. I loved the first three chapters. He used three different people and their experiences (Francis Thompson, Ann Lamott, and C.S. Lewis) showed how God pursued them in their own lives and work. It was an encouraging start. Real people, real issues and how God never left them even when they thought he had.

Then in the middle of chapter three the book took a turn. Not a bad one but it seemed to lose its flow. Gire then started to explain his own experiences about being an outsider. Unfortunatly from that point on the book seemed more about how God pursued Gire instead of God pursuit of all of us. I think there is a better way to incorporate one's personal experiences into an arguement of God's pursuit without making it all about Ken Gire.

Now don't get me wrong there was strong scripture and other book references that I may even read. He did give a very good point about the missions to the outsiders that Jesus talks about. The outsiders include everyone from the Samaritans, Syrians, and Galileans. That chapter was very grounded and scripture and was probably the best of the book. Then the book took a swing again.

Gire even said it at the beginning of the last chapter how the mood completely changes. It was such a swift change that I was slightly unprepared for. I know he confessed in the book of ADD issues but wow it was a little more that a 180. He ends the book with his story of how he feels God had used him and that he doesn't believe that his life has been wasted anymore. It seemed wrapped up in a pretty bow almost, but I must disagree. I don't think the pursuit ever stops. Whether it is you pursuing God or God is the pursuer . There is always a pursuit going on. With that said one of Gire's last lines should be what it is all about ... "The joy on the inside gives us the strength to bear the truth on the outside without hiding from it."(pg. 150)

Being an outsider is not a bad thing. Even Jesus was one.

feel like an outsider?

In pursuing Christ, if you are unfortunate enough to attend a large church, you will feel like an outsider or a number, unless you click with the church leadership.

Happens in small churches too, but not as prevalent.

If you believe in Jesus, then pursue him as He guides you.

Also find a way to serve others.

Being pursued...

For the most part, I really enjoyed reading this book. It gave me new insights on who God is and how He desires a personal relationship with each one of us - so much so that He "relentlessly pursues" us. Wow! What an awesome thought. The God of the Universe cares so much about each one of us. We, who are unworthy. We, who sin and want our own way. Yet, God pursues us!

This book was somewhat disjointed, though since I wasn't able to sit down and read it all at once I thought maybe it was just me and the fact that a lot was going on in my life. However, at least for me, this disjointedness didn't distract me from the overall book or its message.

The book is broken up into the following chapters:

1. The Pursuit

2. The Pursuer

3. The Nature of the Pursuit

4. The Part of Us That Is Lost

5. God's Passion for the Outsider

6. God's Provision for the Outsider

7. Jesus' Mission to the Outsider

8. God's Mandate to the Insider

9. The Part of Me that was Found

I enjoyed learning more about the life of the author who wrote the poem, "The Hound of Heaven". As well as reading more about C. S. Lewis that I didn't know before. I found it especially interesting that C. S. Lewis was at one time a self-proclaimed atheist and yet even he was pursued by God and came to be a Christian - one who wrote many books with Christian themes.

The author does write about his own life - a lot! But I think this book would be hard to write without showing how your life was and how you studied and came to realize that God is constantly pursuing us and that He puts the desire in us to pursuit Him back.

If there have been times in your life when you've felt like an outsider, this would be a good book for you to read! If you're not sure about Christianity and what God is all about. Please read this.
