About the Author
Arthur Benjamin is a professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California. He is also a professional magician and performs his mixture of math and magic all over the world.

Beware of duplication

I bought a copy of Secrets of Mental Maths. As a trained scientist and a professional magician I was interested in the contents, and was not disappointed. Great stuff here for impressing people, and useful techniques for making maths fun. However the Amazon website offered two books togehter - this book and another by the same authors; Think Like A Maths Genius. I ordered both, and was shocked when they were delivered. The second book (Think Like A Maths Genius) was just Secrets of Mental Maths with a different cover. Amazon should have known both were the same book and should not have offered them both together. Don't be caught out by this. That aside, I highly recommend buying one or other version of this book.

Great for SAT/GRE study!

I am a professional SAT/GRE teacher and tutor, achieving an 800 in the GRE math section. After telling many students that the secret to the math section is mental math and approximation, I decided to see what books were available. I saw that this one had good reviews and ever since then I have been bringing the book to all my classes and tutoring sessions. I recommend this book for those who never felt they got the hang of math as well as people who love it like I do. It is clearly written, very encouraging and has lots of drills.
I love this book and I think that it really will help people feel more confident when they take a test or just are trying to figure the tip.

Right to the point, effective, and fun!

At first glance, this book could easily be overlooked and dismissed as another "just buy this book and follow my easy steps to becoming a (genius, millionaire, happier person, psychic, master gardener, whatever)" that would utimately leave you disappointed that you couldn't do it.

Well, this book is not that. It gets right to the point. It's very well written. It's fun. It's practical. And as long as you take your time to mentally practice what you're learning along the way, you can and should be able to master the techniques in this book. You needn't have any mathematical expertise going in. Of course, the author doesn't promise anything special about what you can do with these abilities, although there are some practical applications suggested along the way. All I can say is that it's fun and gives you something interesting to do with your brain when you're bored. And certainly if you like Math already or are a Math teacher, it can be tremendously helpful.

Arthur Benjamin wrote the main content of the book, and Michael Shermer (Skeptic Magazine founder and Scientific American columnist) wrote introductory and closing chapters. These seem a little out of place to me, but they're certainly very good and useful general information about critical thinking. In addition to Bill Nye's (The Science Guy) new intro, James Randi's (famous magician and skeptic) introduction from an earlier edition is included.

Love the world building and mystery, HATE the romance

I picked up this book because Linnea Sinclair's blurb is front and center, and I'm always looking for science fiction romance books that I enjoy as much as I do hers. Unfortunately, this is not one of them. I'm really conflicted about this book--I love the world building and the mystery, but I hate hate HATE the romance (which is not good in a book billed as a romance!).

Felicia reads tarot cards and knows from the first time that she reads Petriv's cards that their future is entertwined...so I guess that excuses his behavior towards her? Petriv is domineering and manipulative--oh, but he's so rich and handsome that it just doesn't matter! He touches her and kisses her despite her protests, but it's all okay, because he knows Felicia's relationship with her boyfriend isn't as strong as she thinks. And besides, he's so hot and her body wants him so much! And she's very aware of the problematic way he's treating her and doesn't like it...but apparently it doesn't matter after all? Because he's so hot? Or something?

After the first few interactions like that, I started skipping/skimming the romantic and sex scenes. I would have put down the book, but I really enjoyed the world building: if I'm dating the Kibera slums correctly, this is taking place nearly 1000 years in the future, after the world has undergone catastrophic climate change. Humanity has gone through and since emerged from another Dark Ages under the guidance of an authoritarian government that strictly controls population growth and food allotment, among other things. But now that things have calmed down, people are beginning to wonder if such strict control is necessary or desirable.

From this emerges the first mystery: why has Felicia been blacklisted and unable to get permission to have a child? And woven throughout the whole story is the primary mystery, one that Petriv brings her: is Felicia's long-dead mother actually alive? If so, why did she fake her death, and what has she been doing since then?

Final verdict: if you can tolerate or enjoy this kind of hero and romance, it's a great sci-fi romance. If not, I'd probably avoid it.

Seductive, Riveting

What if luck has nothing to do with, well, luck. Some people seem to have all the luck while others have none. What if there is a reason for that? In Catherine Cerveny’s The Rule of Luck, that theory is explored with interesting results.

Felicia Sevigny loves her job as a Tarot card reader. She is very good at it, able to see into people’s lives with uncanny accuracy. Or is she just lucky? When Russian Consortium heir apparent Alexei Petriv seeks a reading from Felicia, she senses a connection that is confirmed by both her gut and the cards. But these two would seem to have nothing in common and when Alexei leaves Felicia’s shop, she is sure she has seen the last of him. This beginning scene is full of portents and sets the reader up for a riveting read.

What follows is a constant stream of action, intrigue and future possibilities, mixed with emotion and blazing passion.

Ms. Cerveny has drawn a plausible and fascinating future world where the melting of polar ice has flooded the lower elevations and only the mountain ranges offer a dry existence. Having saved the world from chaos, One Gov now oversees the world. One Gov sets all the rules. Most of humanity, remembering the hard times, is grateful to One Gove and believes One Gov is right and good, if almighty and ironfisted.

Felicia is lucky to have a nice home, a boyfriend and great job. So she has very few beefs with One Gov, despite the fact that she is a bit different. While most of the population has been modified – genetically and with technology – Felicia has not gone down that path. Her Romani family has always been determined to remain purely human. Felicia occasionally wishes that were not true when she envies others their constant connection to the CN-net (Cerebral Neural Net). But her lack of connection also means that One Gov is not connected to her, giving her seeming privacy and control that others lack. This is a relevant paradox. Most of us have embraced our ability to constantly connect with technology, and thus pretty much everyone and everything. What do we give up for that?

Not everyone agrees with the control that One Gov exerts over the world. The Russian Consortium is a powerful organization that would like to change the status quo. They have achieved power through legitimate business using less than legitimate means to make sure they succeed. Having been groomed to assume leadership of the Consortium, Alexei Petriv is positioned to make the deal of the century. All he needs is a little luck. This deal will put the Consortium in a position to affect change. As I read, I found myself agreeing with Alexei – that change was needed. I wanted them to succeed, but was bothered by the methods. Change often hurts. That is something most of us know well on some scale or another. So should I cheer for the Consortium or not?

Between Felicia and Alexei, there is an intense physical connection. But they are such an unlikely pairing. A Tarot reader and a power player. I was alternatively hoping they would get together and wanting them to walk away from each other. Mostly I wanted Felicia to walk away. The story is told from her first person perspective. She seems to be a good person but is in a situation where she has little control, is kept in the dark and is constantly threatened from one source or another. Sometimes that source is Alexei. Luck seems to be on Felicia’s side as she continually withstands everything thrown at her, albeit sometimes barely.

Even at the end of the book, I haven’t really warmed up to Alexei, though I think he has potential. I am always looking for the ‘good guy’ and that is not a phrase I would use to describe Alexei. But his character is consistently dark and passionate and vital and I would not change him at all.

The development of the relationship between Felicia and Alexei is at a pace that parallels the development of the intrigue part of the plot. The connection and the passion begin as soon as they meet and continue to smolder throughout the action of The Rule of Luck. The combination of intrigue and romance is perfectly balanced so that I never felt I was missing any aspect of either.

The romance in The Rule of Luck is not pretty. While the passion is intense, the actual relationship is sometimes dark and unnerving. The ending is a HEA for now for Felicia and Alexei. Where the relationship is going is anybody’s guess.

I would describe The Rule of Luck as dark and itchy as opposed to warm and fuzzy. The future world is far from perfect with One Gov as big brother. The romance is steamy but tumultuous. The hero has a somewhat ambiguous agenda. And the heroine may just be in over her head. All of these features are exactly what make The Rule of Luck such a seductive read for me and why I can enthusiastically recommend it for SciFi Romance readers!

Weird but very fun read.

This book focuses on a tarot card reader who can actually predict the possible future, though apparently not very acurate, considering her upcoming problems. And the head of the Russian maffia in a world were resources are very scarce because Earth is flooded poluted and over populated due to global warming. I found the idea of war over space and the rations for eating interesting. The science fiction premises in this book is very nice. I don't want to spoil the plot for anyone, so I won't go into details. But I really liked the characters and their interaction. It did sometimes bother me that the maffia is portrayed as a better alternative to corrupt government, but I could live with it for the sake of the story. The government system is plenty of scary that you start to agree a bit with the people in the novel. The plot in the book is very twisty and keeps you surprised about events in the story line. The romance is slightly more predictable as such, but that's kind of normal in this genre. What did give me some real "getting into the story" trouble in the definition of luck. It's important to the story, but the semi scientific rational behind it sounded a bit to forced to me. But maybe that's the engineer in me. All in all, I liked this book and I would definitely recommend it as long as you don't want realistic sounding scientific explanations in your story.

Remarkably complete reference

I'm writing this review as an instructor of university courses on engineering geology / geomechanics. Bell's book is an authoritative, well-written reference on basic principles of engineering geology. Although it is not divided this way, there are essentially two main parts - which could be termed, respectively, Geologic Background, and Engineering Behavior. In the part on Geologic Background, aspects of geology most necessary for understanding engineering behavior of earth materials are well presented, insightful, and remarkably complete. Chapters in this part of the book include: igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, structure, discontinuities, groundwater and two chapters on geomorphological processes.
The second part has chapters dealing with engineering properties and behavior of soils and rocks. Some of this material might be unsatisfying to the civil engineer with a strong background in soil or rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering. Nevertheless, this part of the book is also very useful reading. The author's vast experience working with geological materials in an engineering context is evident in the narrative descriptions of materials types and material properties, which are packed with insights, examples, data and references. The book will remain highly relevant to the geotechnical fields for the foreseeable future. It covers necessary background for graduate students and professionals, but is too detailed for the needs of most engineering undergraduates.

Good, but not great...

If you're purchasing this book, chances are you're already familiar with EVPs and have probably seen all the usual "ghost shows" (Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, Paranormal State, Most Haunted etc). For those who came in late, Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) are electronically generated sounds or noises that resemble human speech. These are generally caught on tape (or digital recorders) and are not always heard at the time of recording, but are audible upon playback. There are many common sources of EVP including static, radio transmissions and unidentified background noise. Even though the term EVP serves to encompass only "voices", I personally consider unexplained "human sounds" (such as footsteps) as EVPs. You may be aware of the EVP Classification system which consists of classes A through E (sometimes F and G too) . This system attempts to classify EVPs according to their quality. I generally don't care for this system because, in my opinion, there are only 2 classes of EVPs:

CLASS 1 - EVPs where the "words" or "human sounds" (e.g., footsteps) are 'easily' understandable to the point where there is only ever going to be ONE interpretation (e.g., the voice is saying "Get Out" or there are definitely footsteps in the audio).

CLASS 2 - EVPs where the "words" or "human sounds" are 'moderately' understandable to the point where there may be several different interpretations of what is being heard (e.g., the voice is saying "Get Out" or "Here Now", or the sound is footsteps or someone dropping a coin).

In my opinion, anything else is garbage and should not in any case be considered evidence of paranormal activity. This book has a bit of both. I would say that about half of the EVPs on the CD that accompanies this book I would consider to be Class 2 as I defined above. There are a handful that I would consider to be Class 1 as I defined above. The rest are mostly inaudible and not what I would consider to be evidence of paranormal activity. Having said that, I give this book four stars because I think it has a genuine purpose even if it is not the intended purpose of the author. If you've never done any EVP work you can consider this book to be a crash course in "EVP Evidence Analysis". As a rule of thumb, I think all EVPs should be reviewed by a minimum of five people. If all five people agree that the voice is saying the SAME audible words OR that the EVP has a distinct human sound (such as footsteps), then I would consider the EVP to be a Class 1. But all five people must agree! If all five people can hear audible words/sounds, BUT there are several DIFFERENT interpretations of those words, I would consider the EVP to be a Class 2. Anything outside of that realm should be thrown out. This book will allow you to analyze EVP evidence and draw your own conclusions. In my opinion, over half of the EVPs on the CD that comes with this book could only be considered EVPs as a result of Apophenia (finding significance in insignificant phenomena) and/or Auditory Pareidolia (the interpretation of random sounds as voices). If you've done plenty of your own EVP work and analyzed hours of EVP evidence, this book would be a waste of your money. If you're new to the paranormal world and are interested in EVP and/or paranormal investigation, this book is worth checking out. Just be certain to listen with hard ears and be harsh with your judgment.

Great premise, but the way the EVP's are presented makes it hard to understand.

This is a good primer in the subject of EVP's, and you can tell that Author Mike Markowicz is dedicated and takes his efforts seriously. But the proof is in the pudding, meaning, the EVP's presented aren't that impressive. That is, they would be more impressive if the cuts were longer. Don't get me wrong, it is innovative to have a book about EVP's with an actual CD of them, but other authors, such as A.E. Angel, just cut theirs better. I am looking forward to a follow up, however, as Markowicz's innovation in this field may pay off. I do have to limit my rating because of the cuts of the EVP's and the limited scope of this book.

The Real Deal - An Excellent Resource From A Gifted Man

My review is simple and to the point.

This book and accompanying cd is an EXCELLENT resource for those interested in the field of Electronic Voice Phenomena. I recommend it without reservation.

The book and cd work hand-in-hand to seamlessly walk you through a sampling of the author's various paranormal investigations.

The recordings presented are clear and, I have no doubt, authentic.

The field of paranormal investigation is littered with enthusiasts, hobbyists, and sometimes - frauds.

Without reservation, I personally vouch for the integrity of the author who has no idea that I am leaving this review nor that I bought his book.

When my family had been plagued with inexplicable, frightening paranormal activity for 2+ years that, at times, drove us from our home, Mike Markowicz was recommended to us by one of the most respected names in the paranormal field as being one of the top two EVP experts in North America.

After all we had been through we were terrified of the prospect of EVP and had resisted it during the height of the activity in our house. We were afraid of riling it more.

Even though the activity had been more low key, but more "vocal" i.e. voices being heard in the house and talking to members of the household, without hesitation he gave his time to travel to our home to conduct an investigation.

He reassured us and gave us the "gift" of eavesdropping on our house and property - in our case a reassurance that what remained was neutral.

I do not mention my family's situation to garner attention - but to vouche for the character and ethics of the author in a field that is still striving for validation.

He is the real deal and if you are interested in this area of paranormal investigation I recommend this book/cd.

best DIY upholstery book!

Hands down best DIY upholstery book written that I've ever seen. Way better than newer ones! Every step is explained both with text and very clear diagrams, and many of the furniture variations out there are explained, too. I taught myself upholstery out of this book years ago and I have a successful little upholstery business today, thanks to it.

I received my book on time. It is in very fine condition. No marks. Cover tight and no creases. Very informative also. Good reference book for upholstery. I was interested in the installation of springs. It shows the proper methods of installing both kinds of springs for chair seats. It shows complete illustrated instructions for building chairs from the ground up to fabric finishing. Very complete information. Thank you so much.

About the Author
Talal Itani is an electronics engineer, software developer, and writer. He was born in 1961, in Beirut Lebanon. He immigrated to the United States when he was 18, seeking education and peace. In 1983, he graduated with a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering. After a few years of employment, he founded a research and development company, which quickly became successful and renowned in the field of telecommunications.

Talal first encountered the Holy Quran in 1992. He studied and researched the Quran for 15 years, then decided to translate it himself, into clear and easy-to-read modern English. The translation, which he published in 2012, is praised as pure, clear, and very faithful to the Arabic Original. Talal currently develops software and maintains the Quran translation. He lives in the United States, is married, and has two adult daughters.
