The Janowska Road, by Leon Weliczker Wells, was originally published in 1963 and remains one of the most important accounts of Jewish life during the Holocaust. The book is the harrowing account of Wells’ experiences from his sixteenth to his twentieth year in Lvov, Poland, from 1941–1945. Most of that time was spent as a prisoner in the Janowska concentration camp.
Wells would later testify that he was the only member of his family, including his parents, six siblings, cousins and uncles, numbering 76 in all, to survive the Holocaust. He survived by becoming part of the “Death Brigade” at Janowska, whose job it was to obliterate, with bonfires and bone-crushers, the evidence of the Third Reich’s guilt: thousands upon thousands of human corpses. Following the war, Wells emigrated to the United States. Leon Wells passed away on December 19, 2009, at the age of 84.
This new edition includes an Introduction by Steve W. Chadde, maps, and photographs of Lvov and the Janowska Camp.

I thought I knew a lot about the Holocaust, but the heinous scenes reported in this true account of someone who survived, escaped and beat death many times over, have brought a new clarity to the evil that was carried out, not only by Hitler and the SS, but by everyone who sat by and did nothing, or worse, turned their neighbor, friend, or relative over to the Nazis. Almost anything that I could say, "well-written, compelling, a must-read" ring hollow and trite in view of what Wells and his fellow Jews suffered, and the story he tells. Yet, I do feel that this book is a must-read, for we must never allow this to happen again. It's amazing to me that it did, that it could. But we must never underestimate man's capacity for evil, or for apathy--this book is a lesson and a guide for all of us.

survival in Hell
By Ron Braithwaite
It's unfortunate that this fascinating little book has such a low sales ranking. It has been a long time since I read it but the fact that I can remember it in some detail, despite the fact of reading hundreds of books in the meantime, gives some small idea of it's impact.
This is the true story of survival in the Janowska concentration camp in Poland. Unlike the vast majority of Jews, the author survived by being useful. Early in the halocaust the SS had simply marched prisoners into the woods and shot them. With the Russians closing in from the East, the Germans reckoned that this might have been a mistake and made the prodigious effort of destroying the evidence.
The author was a member of a team--under the watchful eyes of the SS--ordered to locate, dig up and cremate the remains of people murdered months or years earlier. Not a pleasant job but one gets used to anything. Their SS leader had instructions "from the top" to turn over his work crew every six months. Make that gas the work crew and replace them with others. The SS man has a trained team, however, and doesn't want to go to the trouble of retraining people. He disobeys orders and the author survives.
The Russians are fast approaching and the author recognizes that his team, especially because they possess knowledge of the previous murders, will be exterminated in the end. There is an escape and the author is placed with others--like fish in a sardine can--in a hole under the floor of the barn of a courageous Pole. Amazingly, despite these cramped conditions, one man tries to rape a girl. The attempt, for obvious reasons, is stopped.
Retreating German soldiers enter the barn but never detect the Jews. Advancing Russians enter the barn and, overjoyed, the Jews surrender to them. The Russians arrest them as Nazi collaborators!!! How else could they have escaped death? I can't remember everything but clearly I was both entertained and informed.
