The choppy layout of beautiful photography featuring many magnificent gardens was very disappointing. I realize that this book has received mostly stellar ratings and reviews. But it seemed to me that there were far too many gardens selected, with brief text and a great many photos crammed onto one page, divided by slivers of white space. It's more of a compendium I think, which is not a bad thing. But this format won't sweep you away visually.

Outstanding Handbook/Catalog to Formal Gardens from Around the World

If you're looking for a catalog of magnificent, well-ordered gardens from around the world, this is your coffee table book. I've paged through this book over and over, as there are so many gardens captured in the book that new ones keep catching my attention.
The book itself is massive and elegant, with it's orange-cream cover made of cloth and brightly colored pages throughout. Yes it's heavy and yes it's a bit expensive. But if you're looking for a book that is all about formal gardens, this is it.
The format of this book is simple: each two-page spread features a single garden, with some textual description of the garden and 6-10 images of the grounds. I noted that the gardens were from Europe, Asia, North America, and a few other global locales.
Things this book is not: It's not a gardening book. It's not a book about small farming or food production. It's not a book about front yard gardening or permaculture. This book is 100% about beautiful formal gardens from around the world.
