Originally published in 2007 in Holland, this story of an elderly woman’s loneliness in the wake of her husband’s death contains images that will raise questions from young readers—the husband’s body in a casket, that casket being carried to the grave. But it’s hard to imagine a better book to hand a child who has lost a grandparent. Lola and John have been married for 56 years. Life is good with some exceptions: “Sometimes John is sad for no reason and loses his way around the house.” After John dies, Lola visits rentacat.com and impulsively orders #313: Tim. A day later, the cat arrives, bringing joy, comfort, and distraction back to Lola’s life. Jitta’s frumpy, endearing depictions float atop colored graph paper (and add a collage-style navigation bar when Lola surfs the web). There’s no real ending; after basking in sweet memories, “Lola gets to her feet. ‘Off to bed, Tim. Tomorrow is another day.’” Rarely do picture books get much sadder, though it’s how Jitta moves past that sadness that is most impressive. Grades K-2. --Daniel Kraus
Review
Old people - decrepitude - death - widowhood: a bold agenda for a children's picture book. But it empahtically IS a book for children. Not just as a gentle introduction to the subject of old age and dying - though it is certainly that - but also for its joy and fun and fulfilment. Because this is a story that finishes in the ascendent, with the promise of what tomorrow may bring. A superb book by a Dutch writer/illustrator whose artwork is as striking as the story she tells. Carousel This is not just a book for children - it has something to say to everyone. Unusual in approach and with much humour as well as seriousness, the subject of death is handled beautifully but quirkily. The illustrations are first-rate... This is a remarkable book, not in the least bit sentimental but with great truth and subtle wit. And I found it deeply moving. For everyone over five. Books for Keeps One of the bravest picture books I've seen in a while. This one is a gem, I tell you... Sweet-hearted without pouring an entire bottle of syrup on our plates. A sympathetic, affectionate look at overcoming grief, rendered with a pleasing economy of text. Seven Impossible Things This large and remarkable book, with the author's own bold illustrations, has won awards in Belgium and The Netherlands. It tackles sensitively the issues of old age and bereavement.../ Carefully introduced to junior school children, this tale may open hearts and minds to the issues of sound marriage, old age, and inevitably, death. There is no doubt that many of the grandparents of young readers will be cheered by this book's gentle warmth. School Librarian This is a touching story of friendship, and also coping with loss. It is simply told in large, bright, boldly drawn illustrations. Ibby Link

He loved it. He has never lost a grandparent
By Annie123
I read it to my 10 year old son. He loved it. He has never lost a grandparent, but he felt he understood the emotions in the book. For instance, the simple sentance "Sometimes John has trouble going down stairs, and that makes Lola sad too" made sense to him. Against my recommendation, he showed the book to Grandma, whose husband named John is dying. Grandma loved it. Together they shared it with Grandpa John. He was less amused. Also, 5 year old daughter didn't connect with it at all, she thought the book was boring.

Rutgers University Project on Economics and Children
By Yana V. Rodgers
Lola and John fell in love fifty-six years ago, got married, and looked after each other as they grew old together. When John passed away, Lola felt sad and lonely. Reading and surfing the internet did not help to fill the void until one evening when she visited [...] While the website had plenty of cats to choose from, number 313 (a slightly older cat named Tim), was her favorite. The day after she placed her order, a delivery van brought Tim and a new opportunity for overcoming her grief to the front door.
This fresh and original book has instant appeal for its touching storyline and illustrations. Underlying the book's premise is the idea in economics that there is a market for almost everything. Even for rental cats, as evidenced by a new phenomenon in Japan where people who cannot own pets due to strict housing codes will visit cat cafes and rent cats by the hour.

Sad and beautiful.

This is a great book. It's so sentimental. In the end, things turn out to be better for Lola. This book is one of its kind.
